Looking at there websites they all have a very limited number of jobs, I'm talking a handful for the entire nation and none of them have any jobs in Northern Ireland

That is what I would expect. Firstly the recession has created recruitment freezes, I worked for M&S for over a year and in that time no one was taken on on a permanent contract. The recession hasn't been a slight slow down in new jobs, it means whole companies have just stopped recruitment completely.

Secondly retail jobs aren't advertised for very long, once they get a couple of dozen candidates they will take the listings down. So in theory there might have been a dozen jobs added last week but you wouldn't see them now. Remember that jobs can be filled internally or staff will be given a nod to let their friends know first. At Marks we could give our friends a heads up on when jobs would be posted online, the demand was then so strong they were pulled in half a day.

Sadly the days of just being able to walk into a retail job are gone. You're going to have to get really savvy about job hunting to get a place.

Most retails advertise in-store. Our local Connections centre usually has a list of vacancies in town, maybe you have one of these employment centres?

Anyone can do entry level jobs so they don't need to advertise so much. They will get plenty of people coming in through their doors asking for work.

we directed them towards the recruitment website as we didnt know what jobs were available
