I've heard of JD Williams they own a range of catalogue companies.

Your are within your rights to ask for a breakdown of charges - http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/consumer_credit/oft664.pdf
    e. failing to provide debtors or creditors with information on status
of debts, for example, not providing requested balance statements when
    reasonably requested

They can add interest at the agreed rate, but also £12 late payment fees per month. Probably until the credit limit on the account has been exceeded.

Your best bet would to have offered the £140 as a full and final offer, however this is to late and you are likely going to have to pay of the remainder of the account. (£160). You could always try and offer £50 to settle the account - http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=24_full_and_final_settlement_offers

My problem goes back to a time when we have been under great pressure. Hubby only on part time wage, very small pension, etc

He got couple of items out of a catalogue, he owed under £30.00 at previous address, we moved house again we was under great deal of pressure due to sibling, row which still has legal problems, issues against him.

because he did not deal with the problem, in the end, l had to take charge of the debt which got passed it to reliable collection where the sum rose to £300.00 of which we paid, £140.00

l wrote to Jd williams because l sent postal order which they say they had not got. Also in the letter l want a breakdown of all charges, and the original sum, owing, l feel we paid back the original sum, now paying back charges only the at a small rate which we can only afford

where do we stand in right, to know when and why they charged us, each time. also the original date.
    thanking you
Did you keep the receipt from the postal order this can be traced to see whether it has been cashed, if it has not then the post office will give you your money back .If it has then you have proof of payment.

I don't know whether the account pre-dates April 2007 but you should know that if it does, and JDW did not obtain your husband's signature, then the account is unenforceable.

JDW rarely did bother to get a signature, and will agree not to pursue the debt if this situation is pointed out to them. It should also make them more open to a settlement deal like the one DC suggested.

Reliable and JDW are one and the same btw.

thank you , believe he responded to an advert on the tv, also we got a coat from it,

He did not sign for it, also the article went to the wrong address, we moved. The debts letters came to our new address at the time, 2002, so would the debt be out of date, or because we tried to make a payment, it seem like that we accepted the debt.

still waiting to hear from them, but l will be making a strong case against them. These charges, etc

When did you try and make a payment and was this with the postal order? Was it credited to your account?

If is is 6 years between debt letters and making the payment, the debt could be statute barred.

Yes this payment is by postal order, l have the original copy, l am going to write them again asking them for a true sign original agreement, also when we actually paid this debt off, eg payments, I said the £300.00 worth of charges only, they agreed that l am paying this only. They keep restarting the account with reliable collection. Again, l am going to send a copy of the postorder it was made out to Jd williams,
also a request, for breakdown, charges and all dates to this
let you know how l get on, with this matter...
