Telewest

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is thr right place to put this so if a moderator can move it to the correct forum, It'd be much appreciated!!
I received a letter this morning from Wescot debt collection services informing me of their intent to send a door step collection agency round to collect the outstanding amount for services which remain unpaid to Telewest from last December.
I moved into a flat with my now ex-boyfriend last November and as he had unpaid debts oustanding to Telewest I agreed to put it in my name. I was not there when Telewest arrived to install it so my boyfriend signed for it - so, to clarify, the contract was in MY name but HE signed for it.
We split up at the end of November and I moved out - he insisted on keeping Telewest and now I have a debt collection agency threatening me with the heavies...
My question is this: am I liable to pay this debt??
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer me!!
Regards,
Victoria

Have you tried explaining the situation to telewest? The reason I ask is that they I was landed with a bill for over 1k due to a rogue dialler and after a fair bit of coercing they froze the debt until I could claw the money back with the help of ICSTIS.0

i really dont know the legal situation but it would seem to me that
a. you ordered the service from telewest so it seems correct that they should chase you for the debt...at the minimum there was a verbal agreement... i'm unsure about whether you actually signed the agreement (that may be different from the papers your ex signed).
b. have you now cancelled it?
c. morally of course your ex boy friend owes you.
frankly i would pay it and try to recover it from the ex0 -
Thanks for your replies!!!
a) I didn't order the service, my ex-boyfriend did - but he gave them my name when he ordered it.
b) It is now cancelled
c) I've tried to contact him several times but have been informed by his family that he now lives and works in Greece!! (they weren't exactly nice to me when I said he owed me money either!!)
I was thinking I may as well pay it myself, but I didn't even use the services: they were installed on the Monday, and by Wednesday of the same week I was gone...0 -
If the debt is in your name, you are liable for it. The company aren't going to care who wanted the service etc, just whose name it's in.
However, it's not clear from your posts whether your boyfriend put it in your name without your knowledge or not. If he has done then that's fraud, and there may be a case to argue (you'll need to talk to Telewest to find out what to do in this case. I suspect it'll be a long and painful process and you'll need some proof). But if you knew it was in your name (and did nothing about it), I'm afraid this debt is yours.
Morally, yes the boyfriend owes it. But legally, the debt is yours.0 -
*apologies to men reading this* but... BLOODY MEN
Yes I knew he was going to order it so I can't use that 1 I'm afraidI signed NOTHING from Telewest whatsoever, everything signed was by him!!

because of course, women never do anything like this, do they....0 -
No... of course not :A
But at least I'd own up to my own debt instead of just leaving it for my ex to cover for me:mad:

Well, you can try and argue a case with Telewest that you didn't sign anything. But to be honest, it'll take months and if you don't pay it then your credit rating will be shot to hell. If you can afford it, then pay the debt. It's in your name, legally you are seen as responsible for it (sorry!)0 -
