I wouldn't use chlorine bleach on a mattress - I'm not sure you'd be able to get rid of the smell. You could try Oxy (from £1 shops again), or a bicarbonate of soda solution.
Yep, the one I posted about the bleach and talcum mixture definitely works with old bloodstains, when we did march out we got charged for every mark on mattresses, carpets, walls and curtains so everything had to be spotless.
They even came in with white gloves (like Anthea) and checked the tops of the doors. We had to learn every trick in the book to pass march out and if something worked well we passed it on to every new army wife so they wouldn't have to fork out a fortune when they moved.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things
