British Gas debt

Hi all,
Need some advice about this debt hassle.
I am on a DMP with CCCS.
The issue:
One of the debts is an old bill I had with British Gas dated back to 2005 for an amount of £580. I had disputed the bill at the time with British Gas because they had messed up with estimated meter readings even after I had given accurate meter readings at the time I moved out the address.
How could anyone have used £600 worth of Gas in 3 months?? I hardly ever had it on. Anyway, since then they have passed the debt onto numerous DCAs who I refused to deal with as the bill was still disputed.
British Gas never informed me when they passed the debt on and I obviously moved address in the past few years. I did not give British Gas my forwarding addresses as I did not want DCAs harrassing me etc.
Now I am in the position where I have been calling British Gas and contacting them in writing to find out who the debt is with so I can let CCCS know and start payment back. BG have said it was with the following:
- Westcott on 24/09/2009 when BG passed the debt to them apparently. Called them and they have no record.
- Moorcroft 10/10/2009. Called them and they have no record.
- FREDS on 03/11/2009. I have called them and they have no record of the debt on their systems.
I have been chasing shadows with BG and the bill was not accurate in the first place. I wanted to find out whether I would be able to send a template letter along the lines of me not acknowldeging any debt held with them etc and I wanted a copy of a signed agreement etc.
Would appreciate any advice?? What to do?
Thanks

Once a debt reach 6 years, it gets statuet barred, but not sure about utilities debts, wait till you get a formal demand or bill of that debt, I would sit back and wait. If I'm wrong, the experts on here will let us knowI had with British Gas dated back to 2005 for an amount of £5800 -
Thanks for the response. I would like to see what others advice as well.
The problem is these clowns have the power to wreck the credit rating whilst I am attempting my utmost to reslove this one way or another.
