Pensions confusion

I have recently started a new job and am buying my first house. I'm still getting my head around mortgages, life insurance, etc. But I am completely clueless about pensions and can't get my head around all the terminology. It's all too much financial stuff to get to grips with too quickly, and I'm not great with this kind of thing. What I'd be really grateful for views on is whether an occupational pension is always the best option or whether another scheme might be preferable? Sorry if this is a really stupid question. I'm assuming it will be the best option because of the employer's contributions, but is there something I'm missing?

an occupational scheme is nearly always preferable. Wherever there is "free" money, it should be taken.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
