Pound Shops are usually good for Party Bag fillers, I recently got a pack of 8 pots of bubbles, 10 pencils with novelty erasers on top. Another thing i included the other year was one of those Nesquick Magic straws - they are individually wrapped and they went down very well with the Kids ;).

As for party food, Kids usually don't eat that much at parties (apart from buns and drinks!). This year I used a star shaped biscuit cutter to make the sandwiches into star shapes, they went down quite well too, and I cut strawberries in half and poured melted white and milk chocolate over the top (did this the night before so the chocolate set).

With all this talk of pizza's in this thread you could always have a pizza making party, make or buy some pizza's bases, get a range of toppings lay it out on the table, young kids love making stuff and you will have parents to help.

If your oven is no that big, children can pair up and make a side each of a pizza. Whilst they are cooking & cooling - which shouldn't take long - you can play a few games and then they eat their own pizza!!! You could add a few tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers etc to the plates when you serve!!

You could get some chef like hats, Krispy Kreme Donuts normally hand paper hats out to the kids, they are in a lot of the big Tesco's see if you can get some extra's from them or you could make them.

Whatever you do doesn't have to cost a lot, just make it a bit different and make some memories!! :)

My sil did all her party bags from the poundshop and home and bargain, musical statues was the favourite game at my nieces party and she was 3 but they did like the musical bumps too. The food just got picked at throughout the party and she did hotdogs for the adults but she had her cooker at home to warm them up.

Cub leader hat on (yes they start at 8 but the principles are the same).

Decide how long the party will be. Divide it into 6 to 10 minute slots. Plan enough activities for each.

On the day, put a bottle of nice wine in the fridge.

If the children are still enjoying an activity at the end of its allotted time let it run, and run if you can - every minute that goes by is a minute you do not have to fill with something else.

If something is clearly not working then abandon it. Flexibility is all important.

They will enjoy traditional games. The HSE says pinning the tail on the donkey is safe but you might want to use velcro (or blu tak).

Finish with food (musical bumps afterwards is liable to reacquaint you with it!)

Its summer so think about a picnic in the garden if at home - it will save on carpet shampoo and they will think it is a big adventure. If it is indoors, (in the hall or at home) get some big plastic tablecloths on the floor to protect it and still sit them on it for a picnic - that way they cannot fall off chairs. If they are cheapo ones you can simply roll them up and chuck them in the bin at the end.

Make sure nothing dangerous or breakable cannot be reached by little hands and that there is nothing just above their eye level to crash into.

Make sure you have plenty of teamaking stuff for the adults.

Wave everybody good bye at the end. Clear up, get birthday boy/girl to bed.

    Remember that wine!

I had a circus party when my girls were small, They all dressed up (the babies came in pyjamas, dyed with teabags, decorated as animals eg lion cubs!) The older ones were clowns trapeze artistses etc
We had hotdogs and hamburgers for food with the usual finger type foods renamed eg mini picnic eggs were cannon balls.
Instead of goody bags we made popcorn and wrapped it in those clear plastic ziplock freezer bags and bought some candy floss which we put in bags also.
Had a circus parade at the start and played the usual games with a twist eg pin the nose on the clown (I made a poster but you could use pom poms and have an adult helper sitting on a chair!) and a bucket of shredded paper was a lucky dip .

I always remember going to a party as a child and they had hid individual smarties around the garden, whe you found one you handed it to the parent and got a small box of them instead, I've played this regularly with mine, it always goes down well, also what about a pinata? you can pick them up in home bargains for a few pound if theres one near you or even make them out of balloons and paper mache, though it would need loads of layers.
