Pure Soap

Hi all. Have bought a new waterproof coat & it says it can be washed in machine if you use pure soap.Anybody know where you can get it please?(Never heard of it myself, but maybe some of you good people will have).

  • You need to buy soap flakes, have a look online or in the supermarket around the washing powders ;-)

(Regatta recommend dri-pak soap flakes for their waterproof clothing)
"There are no pockets in a shroud..."
  • I can't find any soap flakes in my local supermarkets (I'm trying to avoid evil Tesco, though I don't know if they have any anyhow). Can anyone tell me which shops stock them?

I've seen pure soap flakes in Savers stores.;)

Be very careful about using it in an automatic washing machine. Without suds suppressor, you may risk filling your kitchen with foam from floor to ceiling.

If the soap flakes box doesn't state 'suitable for use in automatic washing machines'..................assume it isn't and only wash the coat by hand washing.;)

The other alternative is tec wash from Blacks/Millets etc and is great. If you use soap flakes in a machine you might end up with a huge flood of bubbles !!

The evil tesco sells "Granny's soap flake" if you get stuck - I didn't know you couldn't still get Lux TBH.
I wouldnt use the above in an automatic washer though.

Lakeland do a lavender wool mix liquid that can be used in the machine, it's non-bio and soap free. I don't know if that'd be any good?

I forgot to say, old fashioned ironmongers often sell this sort of thing.

Sainsburys sell soap flakes for around £1.50, been in there today. LOL
  • Unfortunately our local old-fashioned ironmonger's closed a few years ago, I think because the ironmonger retired and had no-one to take over the shop.
No Sainsburys near me either. Ironically, Sainsburys had applied for planning permission to build on a nice area of greenery near my house first, but objectors finally managed to chase them away only to suffer a bigger Tesco store there instead (replacing the old Tesco which was only 5 minutes walk down the road). We should have let Sainsburys win.
I've never put soap flakes in a washing machine, but I do remember the excess suds from using a powder designed for handwashing or twin tub machines (I'm old enough to remember my mother having one of those) in an automatic machine. I have a book which recommends pure soap flakes for washable antique textiles, and says that if it goes frothy when using for handwashing, that means you've used too much.
  • Hi, I see a few of you have been discussing soap flakes.

I have been using Granny's original soap flake for ALL my washing
even in my automtic now for NINE years due to sensitivies to detergents.

Soap flakes can be successfully used in automatic machine
as long as you use the recommeded dose (which is about 1/4 of detergent) and you use plenty of water. Ideally put 4 teaspoons into a 2 litre bucket/jar /bottle fill with very hot water (be careful)
shake until soap flakes melted and add to maching machine.

If it bubbles or froths - you have used more soap than necessary

Tesco used to stock this until last week -which is why i am looking for alternative stockists.
