Best shampoo and conditioner for dyed hair?

My DD has dyed her hair and was wondering what the best shampoo and conditioner is for dyed hair that won't break the bank.

Thanks :)

  • Aussie Colour Mate. Often on offer for 2 for £6.

Could try the Tresemme Range - that seems to be getting consistently good reviews, they have a special colour care formula.

The best option would be for her to use a Sulfate Free Shampoo, but these tend to be more expensive than the previous two mentioned. Tigi offer a number of sulfate free shampoos (Headshot and Love, Peace, and the Planet being two) and you may be able to pick this range up cheaply in TJ HUGHS, but certainly online.

Another option would be the Naked range from Boots wihich are sulfate free.

She will also need a good moisturising conditioner, as colouring your hair can make it dryer. I really would recommend Aussie Colour 3 Minute Miracle, or the regular Aussie Colour Conditioner.

Colouring your hair leaves it more porous than before, so I'm led to believe. Also, if she's going to be using a lot of hot tools on it she may need something which is going to rebuild the protein in her hair. Look for ingredients such as "Silk Protein" in something like a leave-in conditioner to use after regular conditioning - that way she isn't rinsing the protein down the drain, and can decide when to use it and when to leave it off depending on what her hair needs, because protein build up on hair that doesn't need it will make it dry, 'crispy' and sticky.

If you have your hair coloured often, I'd also suggest avoiding products with silicon (Dimethicone) in them - it makes your hair more resistant to taking colour. Years ago, when I had foil colour every two months, a hairdresser said to me not to use Pantene in particular, as it's full of silicon. These days I use an SLS/Sles/Paraben free shampoo which is very gentle yet cleans beautifully. I was in our new Holland and Barrett store today checking out what they had - I was pleased to see they are carrying an SLS/paraben free range called Dr.Organic and the prices were very competitive.
  • Yes when I was younger and used to dye my hair frequently - whilst using Loreal Elvive (laiden with silicones but I do have very thick hair which can take it), I used to wash my hair in washing up liquid to remove the product build up before colouring it.

That's definately good advice, unless she fancies doing a pre-dye wash with WUL! ;)

I know its expensive but you need much less then with a regular brand. Aveda's ranges are quite mild in terms of sulfates and its sulfates which drain the colour from the hair. I take months and months to get through a bottle- only just finished the conditioner my sister gave me for Christmas last month. Can't say that about high street brands.

Keep your eyes out also for free gifts with magazine subscriptions, its over now but I signed up to Marie Claire for 6 months at £6 and will be getting a full Pureology hair set (which is designed for coloured hair and apparently worth £40). Glamour had one for Goldwell Dual Senses last year 6 mags for £6m hair care set worth £35. Keep your eyes out- both times I caught these offers as a result of reading these forums.

The BodyShop have also just bought out a new haircare set without any silicons of sulfates, both of which affect colour so could be worth a look. £1.50 for the travel sizes each and £4 each for the large bottles.

No chemicals at all in Liz earle, not to mention the fact it smells lovely.
  • Timotea for coloured hair is great and cheap. Can be picked up in most £1 shops.

I have coloured my hair for ages and although I use shampoos for coloured hair, it's never anything expensive, whatever well-known brand I fancy on offer at the £shop. Currently using Dove for coloured hair, but tend to swap around, which I think is a good thing.

I think it's a good idea to use a minimum amount of shampoo and conditioner as a rule and always rinse really well. I don't condition the day before my colour is due.

My hair looks healthy and shiny, so never seen the need to spend a lot on shampoo and conditioner tbh. I tried the Body Shop rainforest moisture shampoo , jennie mentioned, 400ml for £6 (when I was trying to use up a Daily telegraph £5 off voucher) and I really didn't like it; very hard to get out of the bottle, very thick and needed careful wetting to get it to spread around your hair easily, quite nondescript, although you may wish to purchase it for it's undoubted eco-credentials.
  • Another vote for the Liz Earle range - beautiful shampoo and conditioners, I use them all the time, but still on the lookout for something cheaper as I'm going through the conditioner bottles especially like there's no tomorrow! (An expensive result for growing my hair!)
  • There are so many different types of hair care products available in the market today, almost all of them are made up of harmful chemicals which are very harmful for hairs. I would suggest you to try organic hair products as they are free from harmful chemicals.
