It is possible to see the consultant privately and get an op done on the NHS, but if you get your op on the NHS you will be placed on the NHS waiting list. The way this would cut time for you is if you are still awaiting an intial consultation and are not already on the waiting list for a replacement.

Just read this thread and immediately thought how many hip replacements the cost of the recent trouble would have paid for.

Tis sobering to think of our priorities in Northern Ireland...
  • My Mother waited 6mths for a hip replacement. The woman in the bed beside her in Musgrave 'went private' and ws not treated any different from my mum, considering she paid for hers and my mum got hers free through the NHS.

  • Hip replacement in UK costs from £ 9.000with rehabilitation included. Of course, prices may vary depending on the clinic, but we are looking at £ 9.000 - 12.000. Check some price comparison websites to get a more precise quote for instance surgeryprice.co.uk

She had the surgery at Musgrave in March 2011 so the waiting list wasn't too bad. She was back driving within 6 weeks. It would have been sooner if I'd let her! Now there's no stopping her ... apart from waiting for cataract surgery! Thanks to everyone for their advice.

I had a knee replacement almost 6 years ago and waited 7 years and 2 weeks from the time I went to my G.P. and having the surgery. I also used to be a nurse working in Ortho Theatres so have a little insight. It used to be that if you paid privately for your initial consultation with a surgeon you could jump the waiting list for surgery---but that practice has been"officially" stopped.
I used a private appointment recently hoping that my wife could jump the list for minor surgery (I hope) but after 6 weeks her scan has still not been reported on (as this is NHS) and she is on the "normal" waiting list---so initial private consultations are of no real benefit---our health service requires radical surgery as we now have one of the worst in the U.K.:o
