  • I see that the winner of the French house comp has finally been announced in a blaze of glory....... under the tokens on page 67 of Saturdays mail. Well done Mrs Freda Martland of Lancashire.
My question is, did she take the house or the cash? :D

Gladys was talking about the french house, not this English cottage.
    Thank you all who post.
  • Hi,
You may not believe this, but I owned the cottage in this competition. I handed over the keys last Friday, so the DM have some time to carry out a little light decoration inside the house, before handing it over to the eventual winner.
I have watched this thread with some amusement, firstly for the guesses as to the location of the cottage (I guess its easy when you know!) but also the vast presumptions people have made about this property.
    1. It's listed - everything that has been done to it (recently) has been done in accordance with the relevant laws & regualtions. There is not a laminate floor within a country mile of this place.
    2. It backs onto a railway line - yes - get over it. I can assure you that's a whole lot better than being within earshot of a busy A-road. The density of the trees at the bottom of the garden mean that you can't see so much as a glimmer of movement as the trains pass.
    3. Its not surrounded by open fields. You can be walking in an open field within 3 minutes of leaving the front door though. If this was a truly rural cottage in the middle of nowhere, it would most likely be worth more than £320k.
    4. It is people's pre-conceived ideas that make them think that somehow its a bad deal. There is nothing in the paper's description which is untrue. It is a great village. It is also practical & has amenities like shops & schools & pubs & railway stations. They just see idyllic english village & imagine something that its not.
    5. If you win it, you have won it, you haven't bought it - it's free so there's not a lot to complain about! If you don't want to win an amazing cottage just because its not quite as amazing as your imagination led you to believe it may be, then don't enter!
    6. If you win it, even if you choose to sell it straight away, you will have a maintenance obligation. Its an old house & has a large garden. Left unmaintained it will start to look derelict very quickly, especially as we are approaching winter.
    7. You won't win it.
    8. It is still a great cottage to live in, despite all the supposed 'drawbacks'. I have thoroughly enjoyed living there, and is an experience which most people will not enjoy in their lifetime.
    9. But its been fun reading everyones comments!
