  • system restore doesn't touch your data..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Could also be a psu or ram problem.

  • you may have a corrupt profile, try booting from the CD, then recovery console, then

    chkdsk c: /F /R

I've got a problem booting my computer - it says words to the effect can't boot because system32.hal.dll is either missing or currupt.

Just tried booting into the recovery console on the CD and using the string that Albert suggests above chkdsk c: /F /R - it says it's an invalid command. Anyone any other suggestions as to how to get the recovery console to correct the corrupted/missing file?
  • did you leave spaces between chkdsk and c:?

try cd \windows\system32 (may not work).

    then

    chkdsk

    on it's own

It didn't work albert. The computer is my old one so no real data to be lost. Is it OK to simply reinstall XP over the existing copy?

Just FYI Albert I went through the link posted in my #17 and can now boot through to windows OK. I was a bit heavy handed when pressing enter on the final straight and didn't get chance to enter "fastdetect". So I'm now left with duel boot into W XP HE although the good one is highlghted.

Anyway how to get rid of the bad option or just boot straight through, anyone?
  • If you look again at the link you posted above in #17, at the bottom is a link to an article explaining how to edit the boot.ini file
