PC won't boot up

I used my computer last night and everything seemed fine. I shut down to "stand by" mode but this morning everything was frozen. I shut down properly with the main power button but now cannot boot up at all. The computer starts off as normal (perhaps a bit slower than normal) but freezes halfway through loading up Windows XP.

I have tried shutting down and restarting several times and the same happens each time.

Please advise!!

PS I am not a techie so please keep advice as simple as possible. Thanks in advance.

  • turn on your system a keep pressing F8 until you get a screen asking what mode you want to start in, start up in safe mode and run anti virus or sometime, would be a ideal time to backup your data just incase, maybe a system restore is required.

it sounds like you may have corrupted some of the start up files

To fix this you need to have the original windows xp stat up disk and use the recovery option

put the xp cd in your cd drive and the computer will start from there

after a few minutes it will give you an option to either re install Windows--NO to this or press r for recovery console

    This is what you need

Then from here do chkdisk and it will check your disk and replace any lost files etc and start up

    then
  • If you cant boot up in safe mode or you dont have your origional disk then I would advise you press the enter set up, you do this as soon as the computer starts up, you will see "enter set up in the top left or right corner of your screen, F8 I think it is. Once you've entered that just exit straight out of it and you should see a black screen with different booting options, select, "last known good configuration" start up and it should boot up ok

OK I've tried safe mode and also booting up to "last known good configuration" - same result both times, namely freezes at the same point as before.

Anything else I can try before I start looking for my original XP disk as ukraj suggests?

have you tried a system's restore from system's tools in accessories, other wise start looking for your win xp cd.

No, since it freezes before I get there.

If I find my XP CD what do I do with it? Will I lose any of my data? Getting a bit nervous here...

No, I haven't tried that. Should I? Will I lose anything?

you will probably lose all the data saved between the point of the system restore point, maybe a week or something, depends on how you configured the system restore option.

should be worth looking at just to see when the last restore point was, then make a decision. I'd make a backup of all data you want to keep before starting anything else just to be safe.

How would I go about backing up my data as everything freezes on me? Sorry for all these probably simple questions, this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me.
