desperately need £1000!

Hi

Im about to start postgraduate study and need £1000 to cover the rent and deposit until i get my first pay cheque. i applied for a loan with Natwest, but they refused me, on the justifiable grounds that i havent always paid my credit card debt on time! The Natwest credit card has £650 on it, and i have not had the money to always pay the monthly minimum. I have no other debts (well apart from the student loan from undergrad, and natwest interest free overdraft of £2000!). As a Phd student i will get paid ~£15k, so once i start things will be fine, i just need some money so that i can actually start!
Any suggestions are welcome!
Cheers
Charlie

  • Ask your PhD 'employer' for an advance? most employers will consider at least an early payment for employees in difficulty.

Take your contract of employment to your bank and ask very nicely for an overdraft, not a loan. They are scored differently, and it's in their interest (to get their money back) to help you start your job.

    Other options:-
    -family
    -uni hardship fund
    - stay with mates
    - stay at YMCA on a per-night basis, less required up front
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • hi thanks for advice- good ideas thanks.
I already have an overdraft of £2000 (interest free student one), didnt think of trying to get it extended with interest. Could work but i went to my bank to apply for a loan (Natwest), and they never metioned just extending the overdraft.
uni hardship fund - im going to try tomorrow - nice idea!
stay with mates - moving to london where i know noone so maybe not!
family - tried unsuccesfully - tight bloody parents!
YMCA - expensive - £200 per week (altho no deposit)
Like the idea of asking for an advance - I'll try that aswell!
    Well thanks
Any other ideas please post them!
    Cheers

  • I've never used it but you might be able to get some cash from Zopa? https://www.zopa.com it depends on your credit rating.

This is not a recommendation - do you own research on this.
  • If you are going into halls of residence will they not cut you some slack until the grant comes through. I am sure you are not the only student starting university before they get their grant cheque. I know most undergrads move in before they are paid.

Other option ( a bit naff but could save you some money) check if the halls of residence are still looking for hall tutors. You get free accomodation but you do have to be on call to sort our the undergrads when they get a bit wild and arange the odd pub crawl.

In a nutshell - phone the halls of residence at the uni and ask their advice.
