Sony RDR-GXD500 DVD recorder

Just bought excellent recorder with built in Freeview in John Lewis in Watford for £321.. have seen it a bit cheaper on the web - but JL include a 2 year guarantee. Of course if anyone's seen it in a shop cheaper I'd love to know as I have 27 days to price match!

I realise you are new to MSE so welcome :)

but you have posted this in the wrong forum though - this is for shortlived deals or bargains. People will see the thread title and think there is a bargain to be had when there isn't!

You would be better reposting this in Shop but don't drop, I think
  • JL dont price match internet prices. But if you do what I did and get a Av mag like what video and ring around a few places. find the cheapest price, make sure its in stock and its a shop and they will price match but beware JL also add the cost of delivery on to the final price.
    I saved £200 on a TV.

If it's what you need, great! But what a price. Money savers with less cash at their disposal, like me, should be able to get results at least as good, at only one-third of the price.

For example, I already had a Freeview box, like many people, and there's little advantage in having another one in my DVD recorder. At least, not for £212 extra. I paid only £109 for my DVD recorder and you can get one even cheaper now, e.g. £99 I think, from Richer Sounds as advertised on their website.

I used to shop in John Lewis a lot. Now I avoid the place, considering that it generally offers very poor value for money. Their 'never knowlingly undersold' policy is a clever trick which lulls you into a false sense of security. Calling their shop assitants 'partners' is another cruel trick when you consider the low wages those poor people are on, compared to their fat cat directors.

    Regards
    George

I hope I've posted the link O.K. (I'm a bit new to this game). Posted on here 'cos they say price will only be kept for a few days, anyway could anybody tell me :-

It says up to 51 hours recording capacity depending on record quality, is that quality likely to be any good ? i.e. will it appear that my glasses are steamed up and scratched ?
Can anybody hazard a guess what the capacity is likely to be when using a "decent" recording quality ? I am using the long play/short play anology here for video cassette tapes, am I on the right lines ?
Is the 40 gig hard drive big enough for a couple of films at "decent" quality ?
Finally, once the prog is saved on hard disk, is it possible to save it onto one of them round silver D.V.D. thingies ?

Note that this is a DVD player, not a DVD recorder. Recordings are stored on an internal hard disk, not written to a DVD.

    Sam.
