in Cutting tax
Hi all, I new to this forum so please inform me if I'm doing anything against these forum 'standards',
Ok the query:
Basically I have two part time jobs, one at a supermarket and one at a general DIY store. I have had the job at the DIY store for about a year now and am not paying any tax. The yearly income for that job is approximatly £2900.
I have just started the job at the supermarket, again it is part time and my yearly income is about: £3200
Therefore the total income a year is approximatly £6100, which is below the personal allowance.
When recieving my pay from the supermarket job i was taxed £70 this month with tax code "BR". I was under the impression that £6100 is under the personal allowance and hence i shouldn't be paying any tax. Therefore i was wondering how i would go about splitting my tax code over the 2 jobs. Which employer's tax office would i need to get in contact with and what would i need to write to the tax man in order to get the tax code split.
Thanks for your help
Greg

BR is the normal tax code for a 2nd income and means everything is taxed at basic rate of 20%/I was under the impression that £6100 is under the personal allowance and hence i shouldn't be paying any tax.
Technically correct but 2 incomes can always cause a problem. Therefore i was wondering how i would go about splitting my tax code over the 2 jobs. Which employer's tax office would i need to get in contact with and what would i need to write to the tax man in order to get the tax code split.

Phone up the tax office that deals with the employer that uses your 647L tax code and ask them to split the tax codes between the two jobs.0 -
BR means you're getting no personal allowance - and paying 20% on everything. Possibly as a result of completing a P46 with the supermarket and ticking the box that indicates you have another job?
You can ring either tax office - but I'd go with the DIY one - and have the reference for the other one handy.
You're looking at asking for around Code 310 for the DIY and 337 for the supermarket - as that gives a bit of leeway on each.
(Whoops - beaten to it. That'll teach me not to knock off part way through for another cup of tea!)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
