I have no idea how much or who I owe but I know I'm in serious debt

Ames and Talana are both right.

If you want to deal with your debts, you need to know what they are. But, if you request your credit report, you will have to provide your current address. This will alert creditors as to where you are living and chances are you will start getting them to contact you.

As a starting point, I would suggest getting in idea of the kind of options you have to deal with your debts via a reputable organisation such as payplan, cccs or national debtline. That way, when you do start finding out what your debts are - you'll know how to deal with the demands you get coming through on the phone or by letter.

Another thing - read about the limitations act. For most unsecured credit, if you go six years without making a payment, acknowledging the debt in writing and the creditor does not get a CCJ (which could possibly have happened, only way to find it is getting your credit report) - the debt becomes statute barred. This wouldn't write your debt off, but there wouldn't be anything a creditor could do to recover the money. So, maybe you could sit things out for two years and hope the debt becomes statute barred?

What about checking for CCJs via the registry trust online http://www.trustonline.org.uk/ - or does this alert creditors like checking your credit files?

I don't think it does, cos anyone can search for any ccj's, you don't have to give your address.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

A record of each of your requests for (i) a copy of your Experian credit report as part of the Credit Report Service or, if applicable to you, the ProtectMyID Service and/ or (ii) use of information in your Experian credit report for the Product Matching Service will be retained by us for 12 months. Each time you log into the Credit Report Service an automatic request for your Experian credit report will be made. If you request a copy of your Experian credit report (including when logging into the Credit Report Service) then it will include a record of your previous requests in the 12 months which precede the date of your then current request. Your requests will ONLY be visible to you and NOT to any lenders. Therefore these requests will not be taken into consideration in any lending decision.

Not sure if this means that creditors will know that you searched your file
