You shouldn't need a letter. You can either request it online (if you have a credit/debit card) or can print off a form from the CRAs website if you want to send a cheque/postal order.
Read the first tip on this page http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/latesttip/ for how to get your statutory reports.
Who to use depends on what you want it for. Ideally people woud suggest getting all 3. I would start with experian then equifax.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Hi,
You can get a copy of your credit report online if you wish with Experian and Equifax on a free 30 day trial. You have to provide a credit card in case you go over the 30 day period, but once you've printed them off you should cancel pretty much immediately in case you forget. There is also a company called credit call (I think) who provide credit files and the general advice would be to get a copy of all 3 as the information may differ from one company to another as they don't share info. If I've got the name of the last one wrong someone else will be along shortly to correct it.
Good luckIf you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.

Hi and thank you! Well my friend also wants his credit report to (hopefully) find the details of the ppi he was tricked into buying a few years ago so i suppose the postal way would be best, so the three are Equifax, Experian and who else please? All £2 each? Not yet a total moneysaving expert...but im trying!!0

A credit report is very unlikely to provide the details of PPI. It will just show the start date of the agreement, total amount still owed, creditors name and payment history.
For details on the PPI, you really need to do a CCA request or SAR the lender. - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2532927
Or better yet read the PPI reclaim guide

That one Bottleofred couldn't remember is called Call Credit, and definately you need to see all three.I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)
As of the last count I have cleared [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt.

Apologies, i didn't mean he wants the credit report to see if he paid ppi, i meant so he can see who he had loans from (it was 5-6 years ago and he isn't sure)
