one debt, two companies??

hello.

I am a little confused as to what to do with a small debt I have outstanding. I have received two separate letters regarding the debt, one from the company I owe the debt to and one from a debt collection agency. the first is asking for payment in full and the other is asking for half the amount as payment in full. what should I do, pay the original company or the agency? and how do I get the one I dont pay to stop hassling me? should I do all of the dealings with it via letter rather than telephone? either way I'm going to pay the debt, I just wondered who it was I owe now?

thanks.

What's the most recent dated letter?
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

Only 1 collection company is allowed to be used, so either the creditors (internal collections) or a debt collector.

I would not take there word on the part payment, if you are able to make a final settlement payment, then do so but only if it includes the correct terms, use the F&F template here - http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=24_full_and_final_settlement_offers

Its important you have the terms that the debt is settled in full, and will not be chased by the Original creditor or 3rd party, as it is considered settled in full with no amount owing.

The dates on the letter are important to answer your question.
