Home hair colouring

Hi, I've been colouring my own hair for a while now with Loreal Casting Creme Gloss. My hair has always been in better condition since using this until the past week when its started to go dry. I use a semi permanent colour as I feel its kinder to my hair and I use it about once a month. My hair is grey but I feel the semi permanent fades out and looks better than the solid regrowth I used to get with permanent I used to have at the salon. Am I using the colour too often but I need to cover the roots. I can't understand the sudden dryness though I am going through the menopause so it could be that. I don't want to start having colours at the salon again as its too expensive.
