How do I choose a dentist for a single tooth implant?

How do I know who is any good? they all have fancy websites and testimonials.

Their price lists vary, is more expensive necessarily any better?

Where are you? If you are near North London/ South Hertfordshire I can recommend someone from personal experience.

Speak to your own dentist for their recommendations. I have 2 guys that I rate very highly that I Refer to. Your dentist can better judge the quality of the work carried out by the implantologists. More so than the recipients (no offence intended to anyone!!). I know the guys I use will only do what is in the patients best interests and we usually build up this trust over time hence being happy to refer to them

Get your dentist to refer you to somebody.

There are several around your area - your own dentist will know better.

Travelling down to Sth Wales in it's way would be as bad as going abroad. Nothing to do with skill levels of the dentists doing it, just the inconvienience if you had to get back in a hurry if something went wrong.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Maybe speak to friends that are happy with their own dentist and ask that dentist? Or better still find yourself one you are happy with! Read toothsmith's sig

In which case try ringing around a few dentists that dont do implants and ask receptionists who they refer to.

A single front tooth is one of the most challenging implants to get right in terms of looks but a single back tooth is an easier proposition if there is sufficient bone level.

To prepare yourself ... stop smoking now if you smoke, many implantologists will not do implants on smokers

start flossing, using interdental brushes if not using already to get your gum health in peak condition.
