membership is £16 a year - what sort of discount were you expecting?
i dont know of any trial or free memberships, but you can use tesco clubcard tokens to pay for your stay, which helps bring costs down even further
if you dont want to join, you only pay about £2 more per night than a member, so if you are planning on staying less than 8 nights over the coming year, then just dont bother joining, as it would be a waste of money

The Scottish YHA is even cheaper (or even free if you are a student or part of the armed forces). See here. As far as I can tell you don't have to be living in Scotland to apply. I don't know where you want to use it but their card can be used in over 60 countries according to their website. It was definitely useful when I went backpacking!Mortgage free as of 12/08/20!

You could also check out the Hostels and Dirt Cheap Hotel Deals section of the Cheap Hotels article.
Tesco are also doing voucher deals for trips on Megabuses too. Thought this might help if you're aslo looking for cheap travel deals.
