Tech help req'd re Blueyonder(wirefree)

Hi,

I've had the same Packard Bell computer now for 6 years & am currently on broadband through Telewest

I am looking at placing the computer into my son's bedroom & getting myself a laptop

Firstly, does anyone know whether it would be possible to do this without having to get Telewest to send someone around, I've heard about wireless technology but don't really know where to start

Secondly, can anyone recommend a laptop? I just need internet access/word pro, I don't download music/games or videos, am looking to spend upto £500

Many Many thanks.

To set up wireless network you would need to buy something like this. Telewest are not interested in your wireless network and it would be your choice and your responsibility to set-up and secure. See the wireless Sticky for lots more info. Similarly there is a Cheapest Laptop Sticky to trawl through with bargains to be had at this time of year.

  • Thanks Espresso,

I did contact Telewest & they advised that they do not yet sell the cable routers, so I clicked the link you gave me & have actually purchased the Linksys at PC world (via their web, call & collect service £23 cheaper!)

I now need to purchase an adaptor for my desktop as I will be moving it shortly, any advice available would be great.

I only need to move it to the room next door, but when I've searched for what I need, it's a complete minefield!

The prices seem to start at around £13 & go up & up.

Also, do I need to purchase Linksys again in order for the router to talk to the PC?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

There are basically two different types of adaptor that you can use with your desktop. A PCI card which needs to be fitted into the PC's case or a USB dongle type which plugs externally into a spare USB port. My desktop is connected using an Ethernet cable (another possible option for you) and I have no real recommendations on these adaptors. You do not need to buy another Linksys device as they all conform to the 802.11g standard.

  • Thanks again Espresso, think I'l look at the USB adaptor, it sounds like the easier solution!
  • Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanx for that, yes it is an 802.11b,
    2.4 Ghz ,
so my best option for the sake of £8 is stick with the linskys i suppose yeh?
I would rather pay more as when it's set up it will remain that way for a couple years as setting up 2 new PC's

Many thanx and sorry for intruding your thread ioweiowe
