Help - 'screen buttons' not working and ...

Loaded some dyslexia software for our daughter from reputable education company today. Had no problem with previous disk from them - but "Sonic" cd copying programme appeared on screen (didn't know I had it) so thought would use it to make legitimate backup. Didn't work - and since then the pc has been upset - kept saying it was trying to copy files onto cd when I had asked it not to. Turned it off to let it cool down.

When I switched back on it doesn't respond to any mouse clicks on screen buttons - even the Win xp login - click my name and nothing happens. (Yes, the mouse is attached ok and moves round screen, but with no effect). Would really like to go back 24 hours to when the system was fine, but using f10 recover said it would return the machine to factory settings which seems a bit extreme - and the mouse clicks still didn't work although a keyboard return moves me on to the next screen.

Have fired up my old steam pc to post here but not at all sure what to do with our main pc which is less than 12 months old. Any help appreciated.

Thank you!
Beckipeg :)

    go into safe mode

    Windows XP
If Windows XP is the only operating system installed on your computer, booting into Safe Mode with these instructions.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
then use system restore to go back to a date/time before you installed the software

  • Wow, really appreciate your help. PC seems to have unstuck itself. Tried doing system restore, but no matter what date I pick it says unable to complete task. Glad to be back online, but wary in case it crashes again. Must get to grips with backups!

if your using windows xp make sure system restore is switched on in future. start, control panel, click on the system icon then look for the tab across the top that says system restore, click on that and set it. you could also install this freeware utility that gives you greater control of applications starting when your computer starts up, heres the link
