This programme has made me value my vets even more. They're truly wonderful people!
Funny that medivets have over 70 practices (their website is down so can't confirm) and just over 70 vet nurses. My vets have 19 nurses across just 5 branches! Such different staffing levels. It's around 1 vet nurse per vet for us.0 -
I certainly won't be watching this biassed BBC rubbish tonight!
I have a little inside information on this, and the BBCs tactics in getting footage was far from professional (downright dirty to be precise)! It's amazing what lengths they go to to make good TV at the expense of others, and yet there will be gullible people who will watch this and believe everything they're seeing.
By all means watch, but don't believe everything the media brainwash you with.
Did your "insider" explain why they lied to that dog's owner about how it's paw got injured and then they had the cheek to charge her for the cream for it?0 -

The woman who phoned the client was so pleased with herself for her five star lying technique.
Yonks ago I lived in London and used that practice in Stanmore with my two cats. TBH I had absolutely no problem with them at all. I've checked my paperwork (still have that even though my two kitties are at Rainbow Bridge) and it doesn't have the featured vet's signature on the vaccination cards. PHEW!0 -
For anyone that missed the programme its on the BBc iplayer here:
http://bbc.co.uk/i/t66pb/
My blood is boiling at the moment.
The treatment and handling of animals on that programme was absolutely disgusting and I am so glad that woman worked undercover and exposed them.
That poor old retriever being manhandled for thirty minute to get the catheter in was so upsetting, and that poor shar-pei, poor lad must have been in agony after having is leg amputated and then being HIT!!
Why on earth was that lad promoted to head nurse? He should have be sacked immediately!!
And that poor cat who had her pre-med too early and then was manhandled and joked with?
Shame on all those people who have been entrusted to care for people's sick animals and have abused that trust and the animals they were supposed to care for."I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again."

I wonder if clients are made aware of this - I am suspecting not as there is no rule which states that practices must do so - I'm campaigning for one.
I find it interesting you mention this. Our old cat was "hospitalised" last year due to a blockage in the intestine. This happened late on a Saturday, the surgery closed at 1800 that day, and re-opened at 1100 the next.
I asked what care there was overnight, and was shocked to find there was none. 17hrs without supervision....
I'd like to find a independent vet in West London that also offers a 24 hour service and overnight care, should the worst happen. But all the 24 hour services are contracted out to the chains now.0 -

My poor little pup (one year old now) has a problem with her hind leg - it basically doesn't sit correctly in her hip joint. When we realised there was a problem we went to our local vets, the first vet was rubbish (albeit friendly) and i won't bore you with the details but on our second visit we met a new vet. This guy took the time to introduce himself to her, he got down to her level and gave her lots of affection while we told him about the problem. He was amazing - so much so that she loves going to the vets :rotfl:- in fact she is well known now amongst the staff for her enthusiasm and in turn it means that they are all really affectionate towards her!
That is the type of service that I want for my pets - someone who is a pet lover, who takes the time to put the pet at ease and who truly has their best interests at heart.
The people shown on this program tonight were awful and I hope that they are shamed and particularly shamed amongst their family and friends.0 -

Ok
As a long time unqualified veterinary nurse, who has worked in MANY practices, I feel I have something to add to this thread.
I have been enrolled with the RCVS as a student veterinary nurse since 1999, Due to personal circumstances I have not yet completed my training, and gained my quailification.
However, at all timies, I have been enrolled with the RCVS as a SVN, and therefore have been able to place IV's, give meds etc with a veterinary surgeons supervision,
I can hit a vein better than all the vets and nurses in my practice - I would NEVER let an auxillary nurse try and place an IV. Nor would I stand for that level of restraint - although it is warranted sometimes, usually the 'softly softly' approach is bestI don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
