Moving into a caravan. What to do with mail.

Certain events brought about a situation where we again have to house hunt even tho we are happy were we are.

After some house hunting for rental, we came to the conclusion that we either pay (for us) a lot of money for a small house in a nice are, or less money for a bigger house in a terrible area.

In either case as tenants we were lining someone elses pockets rather than our own. An as such there wasnt much spare cash for saving towards a mortgage.

So we have bought a caravan! we plan on living in it for a minimum of twelve months.

The big questions are:

What could we do with our mail.
How will what we do effect our credit rating.
If mail was sent to a family members house, would our current credit rating (and related type of things) effect negativley our parents credit scores.

We currently have a loan and several credit cards . All repayments are in hand. And our credit score is currrently good.

The point being if the mail was sent to a family members house i would hate our current financial situation to have a negative impact on said family member.

Can we inform creditors we are living "Care of" at an address?

Any solutions or ideas please

Thanks

  • Could you have a PO Box address and have your mail sent there, then collect it from the Post Office yourself.

Your credit rating won't affect anyone else whose address you use. Its only if you have joint financial products that you are linked in terms of credit rating /affecting other peoples.

The only concern I can see is that if your finances too a substantial change for the worse and you had debt collectors or even baliffs calling this would be a hassle for the relatives. But it doesn't sound like you are anything like at that stage.

I would think you could have a PO Box, but I suspect this would make it difficult to get any new credit (if you would want to).

Where is the caravan going to be situated? if its on a proper caravan site you just might be able to get post to go there.

Can it not be delivered to the caravan?

Where are you parking it (I hope that is the correct term) and put on of those metal postboxes out side it?

I don't know to much about this sort of thing, but would have presumed (maybe naively) that so long as you and the family member were both paying your way on time through life that it wouldn't have made too much difference to creditors, so long as you possibly keep within budgets and don't get anything else on CCs.

Why not phone or visit Citizens Advice Bureax and ask, they'd know for sure.

    All the best, Sue

If you're using a proper caravan site it shouldn't be a problem getting mail delivered there. My parents have a static caravan at a site where a few of the caravans are occupied pretty much all year round by people who have retired and sold their houses and moved in there. I've sent stuff there before such as letters to my brothers (who are still school age) as my parents tend to spend a couple of weeks there with the kids during the school holidays. My partner and i have used it too and i've seen some of the residents collecting mail from the reception area/office. Come to think of it an aunty and uncle of mine who also have a static caravan on the site lived there for a few months when they were between selling their old house and waiting for the build to be completed on their new house, they had all of their post sent there during that time but i think they may have just had it redirected so essentially the credit card companies and anyone else writing to them would have sent the correspondence to their old address. They then changed their address once they moved into the new house.

Many thanks for all your replies :)

    So as a roundup:

I could use a family members address as my new address with the creditors.

My current financial situation will not effect any attempts they may make for credit, or effect their credit score in any way.

I could then use a mail forwarding service and a pobox in order to collect mail closer to the camp site.

Tixy: do you have any further evidence regarding your answer. I would love to read about this.

It is only a small caravan site, and the owner has stated he does not want to deal with the mail. Fair enough to me.

    Thanks to all.

    Any further suggestions?

And without wishing to appear rude. Do you think this is the most appropriate subforum here for this question?

    One further question:

Is it possible to make my creditors clearly aware that i am in no way connected to my parents, in a financial way. So as to protect my parents?

    Thanks

I dont have any advice to give however your post brought a smile to my face and I just wanted to congratulate you on taking what I think will be a very rewarding step in the long term, the caravan idea is excellent and indeed something I would be doing if we did not have 3 children what a great way to save money.

Some of these modern statics offer more square meterage than most 1 bed flats and for a fraction of the price I think its a great idea and wish you well in your new home :)

Thanks very much. Bought the touring caravan on friday. Very happy with it. Its not big, but its quite modern and cheery inside, rather than bigger and grimmer.

Did consider a static, but finding a suitable site was not easy. Plus i was then looking to 400 to 500 to transport it, once they were bought from ebay.

Thought i may as well pour that money into some more comfortable living.

Thanks for the support. Im sure it will not be easy.
