Dyeing highlighted hair

My natural hair colour is a mix of blonde and light brown but I've been having it highlighted for about 4 years. Due to being a skint student, about a month ago I couldn't afford to go to the hairdressers so bought a home highlighting kit. This turned out ok but the highlights are pretty chunky and the roots are going to be very noticeable.

Realising that I'm unlikely to be able to afford to return to the hairdressers for a bit I'm thinking about just trying to dye it as close to my natural colour as possible and letting my own colour grow in after that.

So, question is, if I choose a dark blonde or light brown dye, is it likely to go green? I was also considering just using a semi permanant dye. Any experts out there who can share their opinion?

im definately not an expert but ive dyed over my highlights loads of times. one bit of advice i wanted to give was : any home hair dyes ive used have turned out far darked than i have expected (especially when dying over blonde highlights) so whatever shade you want id go for one or two shades lighter. if it turns out too light you can always do it again with a shade darker.. much easier than if it comes out too dark trying to get it lighter IYSWIM. oh Nice and Easy are two for £5 in boots at the minute. i would highly reccomend getting two boxes if your hair isnt cropped as my hair is v. fine and its only shoulder length and i would need 2 boxes. hth

Thanks for that, yeah 2 or possibly 3 boxes may be required, my hair isn't far off waist length.

  • If I were you I wouldn't even attempt to home dye it. I would go to either a local salon and have it done on student night, or I'd go to the local college (if they're still open!) and get it done there.
I'd have to be pretty darn destitute before I'd risk my hair like this!
