Looking for a place that sells good steak! The Asda near me sells extremely thin steak that upon frying becomes tiny. It's a waste of time! I looked on mysupermarket.com for steak and saw Tesco are selling a "Large Rump Steak" for £6.31. Has anyone tried this? What is the quality like?

Really interested to hear opinions. :)

Yes I got it the other day, it was lovely, I usually buy rib eye, but thought I'd try the rump, didn't regret it. I think to be honest it's a bit of a lottery with steak, I've paid a lot of money for steak and had my OH moan it was tough. I invested in a meat hammer about a year back and i use it on the cheaper cuts, put the steak between two layers of cling film and give it a good bashing, the wooden ones cost about £2.

I always stock up on rump when Morrisons do their half price promotions. :D

Good steak is hard to find - even Waitrose's can be unpredictable.

Personally, I wouldn't buy Tesco's beef or steak at any price. I used to, but was disappointed far too many times. These days, I either screw my eyes up very tight and take a gamble at Waitrose, or (ideally) buy from a local butcher I can trust.

I have to say you can't beat Morrison for their fresh meat, it really is a delight.

  • I have been living abroad for a good few years, and am soon to be coming back to the UK. Out here (Aus) I go to a wholesale butcher, and can get a whole rump for about 4 pounds a kilo. Admittedly I could go to the supermarket and pay 12.50-20 per kg depending on the cut, but why would you?

How much per kg (or lb) am I likely to pay for rump/porterhouse/ribeye steak back in UK?

Ribeye is about £15.00kg, rump is slightly cheaper,
you'll be lucky to find porterhouse/t-bone in a supermarket these days, though I don't know why. Porterhouse is very expensive though so fill up onit before you arrive :)
