Fed Up Paying Extortionate Amounts for Woodshavings from the Pet Shop?

I go to my local sawmill (ring 118 118 for your nearest, and ring before you go) and get a compacted bale of woodshavings shrinkwrapped in polythene for £5. It's about 1mx0.5mx0.5m, and I keep it in my garage. Think of the savings to be made if you have any animal that uses it

Bear in mind that untreated woodshavings might not be suitable for more sensitive animals! Sawmill's tend to have more small dust in their sawdust which can be harmful!~Diminutive0

I was told by my vet not to use this direct from a sawmill due to infections that can be caused to my guinea pigs eyes as this is untreated and can have anything in it0

Great idea but unfortunately not good for us. We have to use the pet shop stuff as it has dust extracted. Rats are very sensitive.
AndyI like free - it's my favourite price
£2 savers club = £68 since 18th September0 -

If you use straw or hay for your animals see your local farmer, our farmer charges £1.00 for a bale of straw. We save a fortune.0

Horsefeed merchants also sell a variety of shavings at very reasonable prices. Again these are highly compacted.
You can also get one called hemcore, which is scented with citronella

Great idea - pity that the pet shop will be closed next time you go there !
The price of sawdust in the pet shop is not a lot dearer than going to a sawmill but if you expect to have local shops giving a level of service you don't get from the supermarkets then pay the few pence more.
As for phoning 118 118 to get the address of the sawmill !! great moneysaving idea - ask someone or use the phone book ...qui tacet consentire -

Can't be very good for that money as decent straw is normally about £2.00 + a bale.
I buy readigrass from my local farm supplies. It is not quite hay. But I use it for my rabbits. Get about 15kgs for £9.
Last for ever and is for feeding as well as bedding.

Mine is dust extracted and I use it for my chickens. However, you wouldn't believe the number of things that can go wrong with them (I have a 400 page book and it's still not covered every obscure disease, just the common ones lol) especially with the respiratory tract. However, I have never had a problem and have always used it

Just to enlighten you all, I saw a bale of exactly the same stuff I use being delivered to the pet shop to be broken up and sold at twice the price lmao.0 -

My chickens sleep on economical wood shavings which isnt dust extracted. It costs approx £5 a bale and lasts forever! I also have bales of straw in the run which they rip to shreads, again this is just cheapy straw.
