Direct Debit Help Please :)

Morning Delightful People

I am changing some suppliers (Electricity/House Insurance/Gas etc) and want to know if I cancel the Direct Debit with my bank or the companies themselves do. Also when I let them know I am changing supplier do i do it my phone or letter?

  • I'd tell both just to make sure, and tell your suppliers by phone.
  • I think that when I switched (with uswitch) I didn't have to tell anybody - they told my old supplier I was leaving.
About the direct debit - I'd also call both sides to be on the safe side.

The way I understand it: a direct debit is when you've told a company they may take money from your bank account. A standing order is when you tell the bank to give money to someone.
So maybe this affects who you need to tell in order to cancel (ie. a direct debit, you ask the company to cancel?)
