OK, not sure if this is the right place for this post, but I`m comfy here and confident that our wonderful board guides will re-direct me if necessary.
I have an ageing under-counter fridge, and a small kitchen. I struggle to fit stuff in the fridge, then struggle to find stuff that is crammed in there. So sometimes stuff gets wasted because it`s forgotten or lost till it`s really off.
I`ve decided to lose a bit of wall-shelf space and buy a bigger fridge. NOT a fridge freezer, I`ve a couple of freezers elsewhere, so don`t even need an icebox in the fridge.
I`ve googled a bit, and only got confused. There are `Larder Fridges` and `Tall Fridges`. (Duh.) What`s the difference?? Any recommendations? Or hints where to search?
I just want something tall, not too wide, not too pricey, nothing fancy.
All suggestions would be much appreciated.

Larder fridges don't have a freezing compartment at the top so you get a bit more space. I'd get a tall fridge; they're so much easier to use and you can save space by putting the microwave on top.0 -
We got a Beko larder fridge just over a year ago ... it was relatively cheap and absolutely rubbish. It looked massive but was really badly designed so that it didn't hold all that much. A month ago another bit fell off it and we decided enough was enough. It is now in the shed with the freezer and we have a good (Bosch) fridge-freezer in the kitchen. I can get as much into the fridge bit as in the supposedly bigger Beko. So first tip: look at layout, how the shelves work, whether you have room for tall things, whether there is wasted space. If you can, look at build quality: when we moved the Beko we got to see its undercarriage ... it seemed to have been made out of bits of cardboard, held together with tape! Second tip might not apply to you, but I'm short, just 5 foot. A lot of taller fridges and fridge freezers are pointless for me, because I can't reach the top shelf or even if I can, I can't get to the back of it. Check you can use all of the thing.
And actually, I'm not sure that tall fridges and larder fridges are different. I would take both to mean there is no freezer bit. I don't think anyone makes a tall fridge with a tiny freezer compartment - if they did I'd have got one!Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -
A larder fridge is a fridge without any freezing compartment. They can be tall or under counter size.
I have a tall larder fridge. I've had it for about 10 years now and love it.
Mine's a Bosch -like this one.0 -
My parents have a large fridge just like Thriftlady's - it's excellent. I would definitely go for a tall larder fridge if you can afford the space.
Beware of gimmicks with the storage things - like can holders etc. For me, they just create dead space. All I want are shelves, that I can arrange myself, and a salad drawer. My pet peeve with fridges is inadequate door space - yet whenever you put a bottle lying down in the main body of the fridge, it fouls on the door shelves and prevents the door from closing properly.0 -
I was recently looking for a fridge freezer and found that visiting shops like Currys and Comets was invaluable as you can actually see how much space is in the appliance. It's very hard to tell by looking on-line and we saw that although on paper, some had more cubic feet of space , the layout inside meant that they weren't actually better than some smaller ones.0

Thanks everyone. I do intend to look around before I buy, as Gigervamp suggests. That Bosch looks nice but pricey, I`ve seen half that price online for similar goods. I`m not wanting an icebox, so thanks for all the hints. Any further would be welcome as I`m not jumping to buy for a week or 2 yet.0

I def second the looking advice -the layout in some is so different. I tend to find what I like in comet then get the best price online.
If you can afford it I'd go for a bosch/ aeg etc over a cheaper brand everyday - all my bosch appliances have be superb and lasted brilliantly -and in the long run will work out better value than buying cheap and buying twicePeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Hi I bought a Argos Value larder fridge earlier this year as my fridge under counter was simply not big enough for my brood, I bought it from a buisness seller on ebay at a reduced price its well laid out and plently of room HTHPaul Walker , in my dreams;)0

Just to say I have a Whirlpool larder fridge and I am very pleased with it and there is sturdy shelving in the fridge door which I find invaluable.
It was about a mid price range and I saved for mine but I actually needed a specific height and width because I kept the small fridge in the kitchen to keep a worktop and have put the larder fridge under the stairs together with the washing machine and microwave! ( my house is bijoux to say the least!) Find the correct measurements for the space you have - and write them down!;) then see how high you can comfortably reach
I also check a shelf a day to make sure nothing gets pushed to back -stock rotation as hubby calls it- but stops waste!
I am very pleased with mine as being only 5' tall its ideal - like you kunekune really tall fridges are a dead loss with me but I love mine for the space as I can shop for at least a week to 10 days fresh food at one go - if I'm not down the shops I'm not spending!!!!
Best of luck :cool:May you fill up the great clutterbucket of life and may all of your leaks be in cheese sauce
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without:cool:0 -
Hi
I would say this would be better suited in I wanna board - i can move it later once you get more OS input
the only kind of similar thread i could see was what size of fridge freezer do you all have? I know it's old, but still relevant
I'll see if I can find any other helpful threads, and move this later
Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
thanks
