Covering letter - need to rephrase?

  • Hey peeps,

As you were v helpful last time, thought I'd ask another question.

It's another covering letter. This one is putting forward a proposal for a company I already work for.

I've put the phrase "would consider a proposal beneficial to both CompanyABC and I."
My Dad reckons it should be "...CompanyABC and myself." but I reckon that sounds a bit unprofessional.

Any grammar bods in that can suggest the best option... 'I' or 'myself'?

    Cheers

It seems so odd, but according to this, you're absolutely right. ' Me' it is!

What you can do is to take the other party out of the sentence, and then see if you would say "Me", "I" or "Myself".

    Does that make sense?

    It does now, yup.

    Thanks all :)

Split the people involved, get it right for them and add the bits

"would consider a proposal beneficial to CompanyABC "
+ "would consider a proposal beneficial to me."
    ===================================================
= "would consider a proposal beneficial to both CompanyABC and me"

    You would never write
"would consider a proposal beneficial to I "

"would consider a proposal beneficial to both CompanyABC and I." is a classic howler arising from poor teaching. Kids will say things like "My sister and me went to shop XYZ" and teacher says "You should never say 'my sister and me' you should always say 'my sister and I'.". The consequence that you end up with the total abomination of "would consider a proposal beneficial to CompanyABC and I". It sounds wrong to most people who say it, I am fairly certain, but because teacher said it is correct, people still make this error.

I've printed this out and it's now added to my list of 'formulas' and pinned to a board. :D Reading things like this, simplified in this way helps my daughter understand more than just being told something.
