Paying Mr T

Hi All,
Apologies if this has been asked & answered before - I normaly lurk elsewhere on MSE but came here to ask for your particular expertise:
I used to shop online with Mr T without a problem. However recently he has been rejecting my card payments out of hand, the rotter! Soooo frustrating when I've spent up to 40 odd minutes selecting everything etc etc. I have two different accounts I've tried to pay with, both with more than adequate funding. I get right through the verisecure extra password stuff, & then it says - nope, please check with your card provider...
Now, I plan to do that next week - it's a real pain having to go into the bank, but I fear it must be done in this case, but I have also rung up the Tesco help line on the two occasions this has happened to me, just to check it's not them. I am assured it isn't.
So after all this waffle, what I'm asking is, has this happened to anyone else who has money in their bank account, and what is the most likely reason for it? Do they just want me to visit them personally? Do they just not like my bank?
I hate going to the supermarket. I loved having it delivered. And they seemed to miss me 'cos they are sending me 'please come back, here's £10 off your next delivery' type emails. Alas, I cannot if they won't take the money!
What do you think chaps?

Pop into the bank, and they should tell you why your cards are not being accepted. Maybe something needs to be validated

Is it only Mr T's your payment is being declined from? Do you have a visa debit or eletron? I have seen on here many times that certain types of visa cards are declined as they are the wrong sort.

it's almost certainly to do with the bank/card and not Mr T. Phone them (the bank) up if you don't want to go in person.
  • Thanks for the replies so far.
It is only Tescs that fails me, all other online shopping works a treat, even overseas sites at Christmas etc
The passwords for both cards seem to be fine - the bank bit accepts them & sends me back to finish up my payment on the Tescos page. Thats where it all goes wrong.:(
    They're both Visa debit cards.
I think its off to the bank with me..
    Thanks everyone.

I have had problems previously with my cards, not exactly the same situation as you though.

I had purchased goods from QVC on easy pay, the first payment went through ok, however subsequent payments kept being declined dispite there being more than sufficient funds in the bank, QVC would phone me to say the payment had been declined, I regave them the card details, it still failed, I went into the bank and they confirmed there was nothing wrong with my account or card(s), it turned out to be a problem with the merchant, it eventually sorted its self out.

Is it possible for you to check with the store and ask them to speak to the "merchant" as it could be their problem.

I pay Mr T with a Visa debit card every week and have done for months now. I've never had a problem......yet.

It's certain debit cards which have a specific prefix - Tesco system thinks they are Electron debit cards and not the updated Visa Debit Cards. It appears to be Electron cards staring 4508, T&C's state:

As there are overdraft restrictions on the account this card will only be accepted at retailers who can complete a real time check for funds

Some internet stores and remote or unmanned terminals (such as petrol pay-at pump and parking meters) cannot support this card because their systems are not able to immediatly check if funds are available in your account

I think the problem may be that you have used the card on more than one account within a certain period and their security system does not like it. The way to sort it (I think) is not to try your card for 28 days and it should then be ok. If you try thee card too soon it resets the security thing and you have to start again with the 28 days. I had this problem and eventually worked out what it was!
