Desperate for advice on joint finance and split partners

hi this is my first ever post.
i split with my ex partner over 6 years ago.i have spent the last 5 years working every extra hour at work to pay for debts my ex ran up with joint credit.i thought that at last i had paid everything off and could finally breathe again.
before you ask when i met my ex(known from today as the swear word beginning with c)he had very bad creditand yes it should have rung alarm bells but i was only 19 and he is 14 years older.i believed his storys of ex,s taking his money and running up debt in his name and dumping him along with it.
while i was pregnant with our son we took out finance with yes car credit to get a family car,we part exchanged his convertable(bought with the loan money i took out ,he needed a car to see his children and sucker here fell for it)2 years after getting the car we split and he didnt keep up the payments and had the car volentarily repossessed.
he said he didnt have the money to pay for the car but then had a compensation pay out and told me he would pay the car off.
today i got a doorstep collection notice for the money owed on the car.i spoke to him and he just laughed and said im not working so they cant touch me.pointing out that as he doesnt pay maintenance for his son and never has ,that if i have to pay for it then our son will be the one going without as i cant do everything by myself,as it is my new partner(we have been together for 4 years and is an absolutly fantastic man)provides for my son and has done for the whole time we have been together, and pays for his own children too.
and to top it all off my son has found me sobbing in frustration and read the letter and said dont worry mum you can use my pocket money.
what can i do?i cant afford to pay this.

Hi and welcome
So was the finance in joint names?
How long ago was it repossessed?
How much are they saying that you owe? Do you have any paperwork as to how much should be outstanding?
You need to find those out and to get a statement of account showing the breakdown of the balance.
Sounds like your ex is a ****, but at least you sound like you have found a good one now.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Hi
We need some dates, please.
When was the car bought, repossessed, last payment from you or ex made?
This debt may well be statute barred and even if not, there may well be faults in the legal documentation.
Please take it easy.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
