for a few year motherwell town centre has been a disgrace,a place i would never venture,but with the recent opening of wilkinsons it seemed to add a bit of life to the town centre,ive found myself using it more often these days than i have in previous years.
so i thought town planners and town centre owners are finally getting thier act together.
how wrong was i.
i opened this weeks local rag to find and advert promoting the opening of a pound world superstore. we already have a poundland, so why on earth do we need another pound shop,who will no doubt be selling similar or even the same items as the shop only a few yards away?
what kind of incentive is this to draw shoppers and money into the area?

Town planning in Scotland:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Dundee, Irvine, Inverness, name anywhere and I will tell you, without visiting, what shops are in the main street.
Half a dozen phone shops, a chocolate shop, that shop that sells the crappy cards, a couple of pound shops a catalogue shop etc etc etc
Every main street and shopping centre is the same with no character.
The planners don't actively plan, they just react to the national retailers who call the shots. Always preceded of course by the companies PR people who plant stories in the local newspapers about how many jobs will be created. Once the builders and shopfitters move out, the jobs are a dozen or so minimum wage jobs, mainly part time.
Sorry to hear about Motherwell but I am afraid it is a national trend.0 -

i see a lot of towns during my travels and realise this,but another large pound superstore,when we already have a large poundland is taking the pi55. how many AA batteries,jiffy bag and cheap "tear your face off" razors does a town actually need?...work permit granted!0 -

And in Scotland a tanning shop and a off-sales.
Paisley got closed down when all the major retailers left for Braehead!0 -
Motherwell Town Centre was meant to be relocating to the old Ravenscraig site and being regenerated, but I think due to the recession, the government had to halt it for the moment.
The problem is, there is obviously a market for Pound shops at the moment, so they are going to keep springing up. And the bigger stores open up in the "out of town" shopping centres - so many people have cars now that they don't have to rely on local custom as people can travel. It is sad as the areas look so run down and sad, but it's the way it is everywhere - unless you are somewhere like Bothwell, Newton Mearns etc where they can have more expensive boutiques which are appropriate for those areas, which means those areas continue to thrive!0
