Extra firm pillows

Hi - done a search and can't find a thread for this, though I'd be surprised if there's not one somewhere...
I'm looking for pillows. I've a preference for very firm pillows - I despise the type you inevitably get in hotels that your head bounces off. I like the sort you can punch and they stay punched, don't reinflate or anything like that. The splendid but very old ones I have now are feather pillows of some kind, but I can't find any decent firm replacements.
I've no back/neck problems so that's not an issue. Does anybody have any recommendations?
I tried these...http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000K6AWP2/ref=asc_df_B000K6AWP2714496..and when they turned up they smelled unspeakable (of freshly plucked fowl would you believe), so not those. Thanks!

You're probably best sticking with hollowfibre pillows if you've had issues with feathers. I would also suggest you visit department stores like Debenhams and John Lewis. That way you'll have a very good idea of what you're getting.0 -
I did try that, John Lewis but the only ones they had samples of you could get your hands on were either the awful bouncy ones or the type that feels like it's full of feathers and air, that you put your head on and it deflates.
Does anyone know what this 'memory foam' stuff is like?0 -
i consider myself abit of pillow expert
i have tried everything over 10 years due to a whiplash injury !!!
Memory pillows , neck pillows , fibre, cotton , feather , the list goes on , none worked for me , either too soft , too hard or just sank !!!
My answer was this ,
I buy a pack of 2 goose feather M&S pillows, £35 i think
I openthem both at one end and pour the contents of one into another ,
This is absolute bliss, they are firm yet soft , and can be put in any shape you wish and stay there as the volume is doubled !! , the best pillow I have ever owned !! :j0 -
Have you tried pocket sprung pillows ?
These are really firm and keep their shape just like you describe0 -
have you investigated latex foam? ... (it's not the same thing as memory foam)
the pillows come in different degrees of firmness, never lose their shape & support, & last forever
I know what you mean about some makes of feather pillows, I ended up binning (well composting, so not a total loss) some brand new ones because I couldn't sleep on account of the disgusting smell from them _pale_0 -
Thanks very much for these suggestions - it's all a bit bewildering, but I've just found out that there's a branch of 'Dreams' not far from where I live, so with any luck I might be able to get a feel of some in there. I'll report back if I manage it in case anyone needs help with the crazy world of pillows in the future.0
