Gift List & Paypal

Hi all,

Have been looking through past posts to find a way to do our gift list.

We are going travelling round the world for our honeymoon and would really rather have contributions to that than a traditional gift list.

I was happy to put a cheesy poem in the invites, but my OH wants a tangible gift list so people know what they are contributing to.

I found this site mentioned in a post and its seems to be just what we need.

We can list things such as, "hotel in beijing" or "meal in thailand" along with a figure around about what that costs. Then people can choose something for us.

I know some travel agents offer this, but our trip is DIY so this option isnt open to us.

So i was thinking of giving out our honeymoon bank account details so people can transfer the right amount, but i figured people might not have it to hand when looking on the site, and putting it on the website isnt the most security concious move.

This particular website offers an option to link paypal, so i could do it that way instead. When people "promise" each gift they have to paypal before its reserved.

So heres my question really....

I know transferring money from your bank account to someone else is free (unless you use a credit/debit card), but will i get charged to then withdraw it to our honeymoon bank account?

Thanks all,
Sammy

    Hi Sammy
    Have you considered these -http://www.trailfinders.com/

re the Paypal bit- you might get a better answer if you ask on the Ebay board, they are the experts in how paypal works!!

    Hi,

I have looked at Trailfinders, but its no good for us as they issue their own gift cards from the contributions. We've already booked it all and their gift cards would be no use to us.

Ive seen a couple of sites which will collect the money and pass it on, but they charge around 7% to do it.

I'll try out the ebay forum.

    Thanks

    Paypal do charge for transfers.

But you could maybe ask people to give you the money on the day? We looked at this and most of our friends / family agreed they would be happy to 'promise' a gift and then give us the value in cash / cheque on the day :)

    ok - sorry about that!
My friends used travelbag when they got married - but I can't see anything about it on their website now - so not sure of the terms.

The ebay lot are VERY knowledgeable, and if there is a way around the fees (if there are any) they will know..!!

i'm fairly certain i'm right in saying that it's free to withdraw money from paypal as long as you're withdrawing more than £50 (this was true the only time i needed to withdraw money from there!!)

in terms of people paying money into paypal, this is the info from their website

"It's free* when you use your PayPal balance or your bank account linked to your PayPal account. There is a charge of
    3.4% + £0.20 GBP*
for debit or credit card payments
(either the sender or recipient can pay this fee)."

i don't think there's any way that's totally free except by asking for cash! we're having the same sort of search so i will be keeping an eye on this thread...

I think providing the sender pays via bank transfer it stays entirely free.

Would have to warn people though or they may get stung by using the plastic to pay.

If they pay it as a *gift* then I don't think they (or you) pay fees on it?
The only issue with this is that there are lots of people who are not internet savvy, and wouldn't have the first clue about paypal..!!
