Getting hair put up - advice please

Yet again I'm calling on the expertise of the fashionistas amongst us
I am going to a wedding in a few weeks time and have finally (after much wringing of hands and crying over how I should have lost weight) found THE DRESS. I'm quite pleased with it but think I need to put my hair up with it. I have shortish hair in a bob. I've experimented with those little butterfly clips and think it will go up, but want to get my hairdresser to do it so I don't spend the day frantically reclipping it.
Here's the question. Do I need to go to the hairdresser for a consult? If so, will she charge for it? Should I bring the dress along? And how much does getting your hair put up usually cost?
For info, I do have a regular hairdresser and spend about £45 every 2-3 months on a cut and blow dry. She is the salon manager so I'm never sure on the tipping front and it rather depends on whether I have any change in my purse when I'm paying
PS for those who contributed to the shoe thread I'm getting back to it now that I've got the dress for the wedding sorted out, I can only cope with one fashion project at a time
In fact truthfully I can't even cope with one at a time.

If it were me, I'd go into the salon to ask about making an appointment. My wedding up-do (back in 1994!) cost about £15 but that included a wash and being put in rollers, then they rolled it up and fastened my tiara. Yes I did tip them as I was very pleased!0
