am off to Silverstone in a couple of weeks and having not been there before, wondered if anyone has been there or lives there and can advise on what the local shops etc are like?

if anyone has camped on Silverstone Circuit before that would be really really helpful :-)

Cheers in advance

    Hi there

Silverstone is a village a few miles half way between Towcester and Brackley. Both have supermarkets and a few shops as are small towns.

Big shopping you are about equal distance to MK, Northampton and Banbury. Oxford is further on still though.

If its just food shopping you' be better to go with Towcester and Brackley - ld say Brackley is nicer but Towcester is larger.

    Hope that helps:)

    Hi Queen of Cheap,

If you are going to a REALLY popular race meeting, then forget about shopping if you are camping. The traffic situation at Silverstone is horrific. Once you get into the circuit, which is bad enough, it's a nightmare getting out. We used to go to the F1 GP regularly and, (after the first time learning-curve), always took everything with us.

One of the best things about camping there was taking our mini gaz cooker and frying pan into the circuit, and cooking bacon first thing in the morning while watching first practice. You could see everybody around drooling! :rotfl:

Enjoy yourselves but forget about shopping!

Thank you both- yes it is for a popular race meeting, so will try and make sure we have everything we need.

Else I shall send him to the shop....*evil cackle*

    Thanks again :-)

  • if you time it right, getting to the shops in Towcester (they have tesco) or at six fields in northhampton there's no problem.

There's a great pub in Towcester, the Saracen's head, does good food. If you leave the circuit/camp ground about 6-7ish the traffic will be fine.

Also depends what days you'll be there. When my friends and I go for F1 we go up on the Thursday, set up the tents and go stock up in tesco (stuff for barbie etc). No problem with the traffic then (although avoid 'rush hour' time). The other nights, when racing is in full swing we don't leave the camp site until the evening, which gives the traffic time to die down. There is a lovely chinese takeaway at the far side of Towcester, Lees Cottage, which is our regular saturday night dinner.

The traffic flow system has improved, but when you have close to 100,000 people trying to get away, its worth just taking it easy. We never leacve on Sunday night now, always stay over til Monday.

Also, on the A43 just up the road (couple of miles, about 30 mins walk) is a BP garage and a little chef. The BP is also a M&S food, has one of those bake&bite bakeries, so you can stock up on milk/drinks. McDonalds is next door.

Silverstone Village (other direction, 15 mins walk, depending on which campsite) does have a village shop (and several pubs). The village shop is well stocked.

We camp near the 'windmills' campsite, which is the set of campsites directly behind pit straight, so quite close to the village, bit of a further trek to Towcester.
