what's going wrong with my daughter

my daughter is in year 3 and was due to move up to year 4,as the school has not got enough student's or teacher's for a 6th class they are only having 5 classes so this is how the classes go
class 1=reception + year 1
class 2=year 1+ year 2
class 3=year 3+ year 4
class 4=year 4+ year 5
class 5=year 5+ year 6
so basically if you struggle in your class work then you have to repeat the year again even if like my daughter you were not that far behind,which is what i'm finding hard to work out ,if she was not that far behind why does she have to repeat the whole year,surly she will be even further behind than her current year which is year 3,
i'm confident that the the current year 3 teacher is not that keen on my daughter and i know that my daughter is not keen on the year 3 teacher,
so i thinking do i move her to another school and see how she gets on or keep her at her current school and tell her to just grin and bear it,
i know of other parent's who have pulled there child out and moved them to another school and they are doing very well and are up to standard,
what i'm asking is how can i help my daughter more to help her get up to ks2(key stage 2) level or even a little better so she can rejoin her original class members,i already sit down with her and help her with her homework she has no problems with reading as at school she is a free reader(allowed to read any book)
class 1=reception + year 1
class 2=year 1+ year 2
class 3=year 3+ year 4
class 4=year 4+ year 5
class 5=year 5+ year 6

OP I'm sorry but really struggled to read your post.
Please can you edit with some paragraphs and sentences, as some people who might be able to help will not want to sit and read your OP.0 -
I struggled to read it too!
You really need to speak to the head.
In this area they don't keep children back at all (which I thoroughly agree with - nothing like being held back a year to give other kids something to pick on for the rest of their school life) they just give extra help where needed so that kids don't fall behind in the first place.
What's all this about numbers and the teacher?
Are you saying that the teacher is going 'up' a year with the class and is holding your daughter back because she doesn't like her?
Hopefully the answers to those questions will clear up a bit.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

Move her to a different school. It's cruel to hold children back. It's also clear that she is not thriving in her current school.0

My daughter is 8 years old and was due to move up to year four class, I’ve been talking to the teacher and her assistant and they say that my daughter was struggling with her maths and her spelling, which is new to us.
In the year before she was getting them right, she goes into this year 3 and now she can’t do the same spelling she has done already. I don't know if it’s the fact that the main teacher went of sick and they brought back a teacher that was retired to cover and the fact that they have had about 3 other temps in, but this has really upset my daughter and she just can’t settle. when she is home she can do the math and spelling's, that’s what I don't get.
because my daughter can’t do the 30 math sums and 15 spellings within the 5min window they are saying that she can’t move up even though they told her that if she try's harder then she may be able to move up with the rest of the class.
since she has found out she is staying in class 3 her so called friends will have nothing to do with her because she is staying down a class, and now the head teacher has said that at the start of the new school year they will have her assessed to see if she need's any extra help
but why has it taken them 4 years to do this test on her. why when I’ve been going in have they told me that she is just meeting the standard for ks2. why keep her hope's up that she will be staying with her class
they used to have 6 classes but some of the teachers left and they only have 5 classes. I think they have done it this way just to make the numbers up.
of course I don't want my daughter to struggle in class for but if she is not that far behind, which is what they are telling me, then why can’t she go into that class and have extra help in there.
it's a waste of time talking to the school because they are set in their ways and will not change anything, plus the teacher who is teaching my daughter at the moment does not seem to like my daughter. she seems to be on her back and blame her for the stuff that she did not see happen, but my daughter just happens to be near at the time. I'm not saying my daughter is an angel but as a parent you know when your child is lying. but the teacher just say's that she will keep an eye on it and so that very same teacher is moving on to teach year 4 next school year,
I just don't know if to move her to another school as a friend of ours child went to the same school and they decided to keep her child back twice and the parent was not happy and moved her child to a new school and the new school said he was up to standard and should never have been held back. since being in the new school has won class awards for working hard doing well with math English and science ,
so what should I do that’s best for my daughter and how can I help her to get back up to standard. I already do her home work with her and read every night although she does not have a problem with reading she is a free reader so she can read any book they give to her

Could you make an arrangement with the school that you could get her a tutor over the summer and if she can reach a certain level she can move up?0

All i will say is my dd was always very good at maths but they decided to move her into the middle grade(she whinged how bored she was) I got a phone call out of the blue couldnt understand it she hadnt said she was struggling etc. Not happy but didnt like her teacher said want her stressed etc(this was in primary school) i asked how it had not got noticed before and told it was a new teacher and got missed ! Thats fine but now she is in the bigger school and top class of 4 i feel angry that she obviously didnt have a problem.! I am not saying its the same for your dd but i would be wary with so many temps there has been .! If she is struggling i think its very unfair to keep her back when her friends go up.0

before my daughter even went to that school she went to a playgroup to get her used to meeting and being around other children, and the helpers and teachers at this playgroup said that she was very forward for her age,she could say her colours and even what colours you had to mix to get a colour she was good at her shapes she was good with her motor skills and they said that she was going to be a bright child,then she stars at her current school and from day one they have been trying to label her with things like she has a form of adhd which we took her to the doctors and the doctors said its just the school going over the top there is nothing wrong with our child, and then she moved into year 1 class,there was no problems then same teacher but year 2 and then she says that my daughter is fine but she is not at the top end of the class which is fine because not all children can work to the top end of the class,so i ask my daughter whats going on why is she not trying so hard and she said its all really boring because can already do what they are teaching them,then she moves into year 3 and its just gone down hill from there,the first month my daughter was in there the original teacher said my daughter was doing really well but needs to practise her writing skills then the teacher is off sick so they get temp in then another one then they bring in the teacher who retired last year and as soon as she is in there she does a test on all the children to see where they are and says that my daughter is really struggling and has just caught up towards the end of the school year so they must be thinking that she will struggle to much in the next class0

no one is saying it so i will.
We all hope that our angels are bright and academic.
they can't all be.
I will be the first to say my son is carp at music and has no sense of rhythm, he hates maths and knows he will never be in the top set, is he bothered, no am i no, why, because there is no point forcing him with these 2 subjects, it's never going to happen.
But he excels in I.T.
If we all moved our kids because we thought that it was the teachers fault our darlings were not top set in each and every lesson, ........
i stayed behind a year in primary school... does that mean i will forever be thick?
I'm a qualified I.T. engineer so obviously I'm not that bad.0 -
if the is in the lower half of her class academically then yes she will be in the lower half of the mixed year group.. which is what you have been told and you are not happy with from what I can see.
They had mixed year groups at our school for a few years.. my older 2 went up with the more able pupils and my DS2 stayed in the lower half of his year and worked with the brighter children from the year group below.
They classes have mixed abilities anyway and usually have abot 3 different topics being taught at the same time to each of these groups.. they are teaching to the childs ability rather than the parents expectation of their child ability.. or the MENSA standard we would all like for our children.
There isn't anything wrong with your daughter she just simply is not the brightest in the class and is going to be working with the brighter children from the year group below.. being taught at a level she is working at and she can understand. they cannot put her in with the more able pupils unless she is demonstrating she has the ability to keep up.
Give her a chance.. she will be mixing with new children and hopefully the teacher will be more stable next year as it is very unsettling for them to have a whole host of different teachers.. My DD3 has had 3 teachers in the last year and is set to have yet another in September which has just not helped her at all. I also kicked up a fuss when DD1 moved to year 3 and the school wanted them to have a third teacher in as many terms.. but the new teacher was a horrible witch of a woman anyway.
I'd ask why they thought she was not achieving at a level according to her entry levels and see where she needed a bit of help and see if you can get her a little extra support in school and see what things you would need to cover with her at home in order to give her that little push in the right direction. She isn't being 'kept behind' they are mixing the school years due to a very small year 2 group by the look of it and they cannot all be in one class due to the cap of 30 children per class! The school will not have the budget for another teacher if they do not have the correct number of pupils so in a sense it isn't their fault. But believe me you will not be the only person thinking their child is being hard done by!!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Sorry but I'm struggling to see this as a problem. I think it has the potential to work out better for ALL the children.
The school are basically splitting the classes according to ability and not so much by age. This has to be better for all of them, surely? So long as all the children are put in the correct group and that this is monitored throughout the year (just as kids can have a growth spurt, a learning spurt is more than possible), the work should be challenging for everyone in the class, with no one getting bored or having concepts 'go straight over their head' . It is NOT a race to learn stuff. What is important is that she learns it well in the end.
What is your objection to your daughter being taught at her own level? Or is it that you do not agree that she should be in this class and should be in the one 'above'?0
