Credit check ruined my application!!

Hello
Got accepted for a job with a medium sized building society this week as a graphic designer and have now since heard that they have said no due to missing a few payments on my credit card!

Pretty gutted as I was actually told (by them) that the job was mine!!

I thought that missed mortgage payments/CCJs/defaults would be a problem but seeing as all I would be doing is changing their website around it really wouldnt be a massive issue??

Are they right in doing this or am I just being a naive thinking that its fair enough??

Thanks for any feedback!!

Keeping up with payments is seen as a sign of being responsible. Depending on when they were missed (older than 2 years), you could appeal. Harsh, but that's the way employers look at potential employees.
  • I am going to appeal as I have nothing to do with customer accounts or information. If I were involved in that side then fair enough but I am a graphic designer - and what does it matter if I now and then miss a payment and catch back up later - I am still really good at design work!!!

Anyone out there have any further help at all (eg what could I do/who could I speak to?)

    Thanks again

Change this attitude to, 'I won't miss another'. Then the next time a job comes along, you won't need to worry!!

Most people have missed payments at some time or another, but it does show a lack of 'organisation' or 'cash'. If you are skint, then often it is out of your control. But as you say it is organisation, it most certainly is.

    Good Luck

    Not all employers

Credit checks are mostly done when applying for jobs in either Debt Collection Management or Banks, Building Societies and other Financial Organisations

It's a harsh reality, because other countries (like Ireland), won't demand a credit check from a person who applies for an entry level job at a bank. There are criminal checks done, of course, but not credit checks.

I can feel for the OP. I went for a job with a credit agency, and was turned down, I haven't lived in the UK long enough to have a decent credit score and as a result there was nothing I could do. This set me back, because if I'd had the job, I know I would have been good at it and I wouldn't have joined the dole queue.

I'm not sure this helps! If this person makes this months payments all on time - the potential new employer is still going to see the previous missed payments!!

And OP - I thinks its harsh. Appeal. if you've got nothing to do with the customer info then can't see why they'd care about yo finances.

From now on I will only employ people who never missed a credit card payment, never went over their overdraft, never had a parking fine, never did anything illegal in their teens (drugs, shoplifting, drunk and disorderly at 16, anyone???;)), always paid their tax 100% without ever making a mistake.....

Oh dear I won't have anyone working for me. Oh wait, I won't have a job either....
