Just to clarify, you must make a paypal payment for named goods to have protection. The item you are buying must be clearly shown and you must NOT send it as a gift.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Ive asked and he says he wont use paypal.
In all honesty, I havnt used paypal upto this date for the same reasons that he's shared. So i understand why he said what he said about not wanting to sign up.
I asked about straight transfer but he didnt wanna give out his details.
Guess it will have to be cash on collection grrrr0 -

Cash on collection though is safer for you, why don't you want to use it?
AS for bank transfers, that would have been a terrible idea from a buying point of view.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I wouldn't consider it to be safer. At least with a bank transfer you can prove the other person was paid.
What if the item being bought is a car, and the next day the coppers come round and say it is stolen and take it away.
They then ask you who you bought it from and you reply "A bloke in a layby, he had a baseball cap and a gmail address".AS for bank transfers, that would have been a terrible idea from a buying point of view.
I agree, but would have interpreted the seller not wanting to give those details not wanting to be traced, and therefore alarm bells would have rung.
Same with not accepting a cheque, "My bank would know which account he paid it into, therefore he could be traced"
Sounds to me like the seller is trying hard not to be traced, and you have to wonder why.0 -
Like i said he seems like an older guy so i guess in a sense hes trying to be secure.
Im kinda paranoid like that too.
Ok he did say, he will send me an email of the receipt he has for it that has the warranty, to prove he does have the specific card.
He also said I can see and take the receipt on collection.
I also said if im buying then to not box the product heavily so i can see it and make sure they arent bricks.
He was fine with that.0 -

He may also be an older guy with three younger mates who will be there to give you a good kicking and take your money.
How fast can you run if the busy spot turns out to be not busy when you get there?Im kinda paranoid like that too.
Are you paranoid about meeting complete strangers who have advanced notice that you are carrying money? Must be a fair bit if you live at opposite ends of the country and plan to meet somewhere in the middle.Ok he did say, he will send me an email of the receipt he has for it that has the warranty, to prove he does have the specific card.
Tell us what the item is, and we'll all send you an email of a receipt for one.He also said I can see and take the receipt on collection.
He didn't happen to be smiling and thinking "If you can still stand" did he?I also said if im buying then to not box the product heavily so i can see it and make sure they arent bricks.
He was fine with that.
I expect he was, but now someone knows exactly where you are going to be, and exactly how much money you will be carrying.
How do you know you aren't going to be mugged?
If I were you, I'd go to my local police station and explain what I am going to do. They will lock you up for your own safety.0 -
Lol i totally understand what you mean. I think im blinded by the fact that im desparate for the damn thing! i mean, I am taking some people with me too, I wont be carrying the cash, I'll pick the place where we exchange. Im not paranoid about meeting people i dont know im rather secure like that. I do think about these things and always think about the risks first hence why ive asked so many questions lol
You wanna join me geordie? you can stand back and watch...if it works out hopefully it may restore some, erm, you know what i mean.
If it doesnt you can secretely film it, stick it on youtube and plaster it on every forum ever :-)
Oh and i picked out a busy train station in London, ive been to this station and its always packed.
Maybe i could pick out a pub and get any londoners on here to meet up in there...all anonymous ofcourse lol for observational purposes.
Im hoping you can talk me out of this geordie cos like i say, the woll is still over my eyes :-(0 -
I think I'm best leaving this thread as I cannot get my head round the idea that anyone would want to make an unsafe payment to a complete stranger. On my usual boards the mantra is always cash on collection where possible, you see the goods and you pay. The moment someone insists on a cheque or a bank transfer we just assume it is a scam, the money will be taken and the seller long gone. If cash is not a practical option then a safe payment method that guarantees a refund if no goods are received, and that does not include a cheque or bank transfer.
Eah to their own I suppose.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. This is one of the strangest threads I have ever read we have someone who seems to be determined to be scammed despite the good advice being given. if you really want to give money away just PM me you can have my bank details and do a bank transfer to me. Why start a thread asking for ad?vice and go ahead with what you were going to do anyway
I await the 'I've been scammed what can I do' thread

I do hope it's not a scam but you are opening yourself up to it with open arms at the momentGeordie_Joe wrote:I agree, but would have interpreted the seller not wanting to give those details not wanting to be traced, and therefore alarm bells would have rung.

You seem to be missing the point even if you have the receivers details how do you know its not a bank account set up just for this type of scam so untraceable. Even if you were scammed and managed to trace them and then took them to a small claims court and won. You are still not guaranteed your money back. Also a written receipt will be good enough for legal purposes to prove a payment has been made.
The best way to protect yourself from a scam is not to get scammed in the first place. This is what the OP seems like they are trying to do.
Cash on collection is simple. You go there you check the item. Once you are happy it's fine and works etc. You hand over your cash and get a written receipt.

Slightly baffled by this. This guy doesn't want to give you his bank details, accept a cheque or sent up a paypal account. He wants to meet you in a public place and will only take cash. You know yourself that this sounds dodgy as anything, yet you are still going to do it???
You don't say what the item is so can't be too specific but say you pick up this item (and don't get mugged etc in the process!), take it home (across the country as well) and it turns out to be fake, to have something wrong with it, or it doesn't work. Will you know anything about this guy apart from his name (which is not guaranteed to even be real) and a generic hotmail/gmail/etc address that he could have set up in 2 mins precisely for things like this?
You say you are desperate for this item and am assuming it is a massive bargin if you are prepared to travel halfway across the country for it. If something sounds too good to be true, it generally is!
