i'm relatively new to the aberdeen area (only lived here 7 years  ) and am hoping some of the residents can help. as part of trying to be old style i'd love to find places other than supermarkets to buy fruit and veg and meat etc preferably cheap too as i'm a dfw as well!
oh and while i'm at it, any recomendations for driving instructors that are cheap but good?

Hi
I no longer live in Aberdeen (sigh) but Mum and Dad are still there - they regularly go to Cable Lane in Torry and buy fish direct - much cheaper. If you drive out into the country toward Drum Castle there are lots of places advertising home grown veg for sale....cant think of anything else at the moment

Id be interested too re the fruit and veg. My son eats loads of fruit.
Yes there are a few direct fish sellers in Torry (thats where i live). Also in Portlethen there a butchers place (Mckintosh i think) that had a direct shop where you can buy from. Not sure what their prices are like tho.
As for driving instructiors, are any cheap??? I went with Roadwise years ago, still not passed my test tho (thats laziness on my part not them).Bringing up 2 handsome boys and 1 gorgeous girl the MSE way!Joseph born 19th December 2001Matthew born 8th August 2007Tara born 23rd January 20110 -

My friend has been learning to drive with Hickmans, he's a good teacher and i believe he's priced at £25 an hour, not sure how others compare.
As for fruit and veg, i believe there is a stall in the green on a friday/saturday that does fruit and veg. The Aberdeen Market on Market Street has fresh meat and fresh fish counters downstairs, there is also a sushi bit there as well.Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.0 -
Have you ever tried the farmers market last Sat of every month I think!!

Mellis Cheesy shop on Rosemount Place has just started selling organic veggies.
I would recommend Roadwise too, but can't comment on prices.for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

For driving you could try Dave Keith at Slains Driving School. Dave taught me I think 9 years ago now (passed first time). He has loads of patience! My mum's neighbour is now learing with him & I'm sure she said it's £19 per hour which is still reasonable....Edited to say his telephone number is : 01224 8216500

Just spotted this thread. I can highly recommend The Store as someone posted a link too earlier. We go there (you need to drive to Foveran) and get meat and sausages. The ladies there are very knowledgable about buying the cheaper cuts of meat and slow cooking to get the best flavour. They are occasionally at the Belmont Street Market.
This link in Aberdeenshire Council gives information on markets in the Aberdeenshire area if you fancy a Saturday out of the town!!!

I also like the Belmont Street Market once a month, the fruit and veg man who goes there is also in the Green every saturday selling veg and eggs - recommended! The Best Things in Life Are Free0 -
