Cancelling a contract offer

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me:

I am currently on a 23 month contract which expires August 7th. However, on May 6th I was verbally told that I would be receiving a six-month extension. I was told yesterday that this is no longer the case. I had booked Annual Leave starting August 9th - therefore in the extended term - and will incur costs when I have to cancel it. This AL was verified by my line manager and for the past two months we have all been discussing work to be carried out in the extension period. I was told I didn't need to look for new work because the extension was arranged.

I know a verbal contract is a legitimate contract as soon as you start work but in my case does this mean that my existing contract was therefore extended from the moment the offer was made, or did I have to be in place and working for the company after August 7th for it to be valid?

Any pointers will be much appreciated.

Chris

Why would you incure costs in cancelling your Annual Leave?

Why not ask your Line Mananger whether or not your work contract has/will be extended after the 7th August?
My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

Cancelling the holiday I booked because I had assurances I was going to be employed for another 6 months I mean.

They told me it would be, until March 2011, but now they are rescinding it. That's my point.

I'm trying to find out if I can waive my rights to continuous employment in order to stay on for the extension period because the money is in place. That's not the issue, it's the beneficial terms of being continuously employed over the two year mark that my employer doesn't want to allow. Any more.
