Going Grey

Hi All,

I'm nearly 50 and am going grey. I've never dyed my hair but kinda don't want to go grey just yet.
My hair is sort of mousy blonde with light blonde at the front & it gets darker at the back.

If I buy hair dye will my hair end up a uniform colour all over - something that I am not that fond of in others? Is it possible for me to do it at home?
Or should I go to a salon?
How much can I expect to pay?
I haven't been to a hairdreesers in over 5 years - so I bet I'm in for a shock as the hairdreeser will be too no doubt.

Some do give an all the same all over colour, but not all, it depends which brand if your buying from the box or if your in a salon, just mention you want your natural highlights to show through. If you have never dyed your hair before, I'd say go to a salon, others may disagree but I'd say go, keep an eye on what they do, how they do it, the tools they use. When you feel more confident then try at home alone. But its not so easy to always get an even colour with a boxed dye, I have had my hair dyed for the past 15 years and I tried it myself last month- not a good look! Am sure there are people who can do DIY boxes perfectly but I am not one of them!

Salons vary in price, I can't comment as I have never done this- I have only gone as a hair model and had my hair dyed for free/a low cost, my mum dyes my hair inbetween (she is not a hair dresser, we just do each other favors and this means she dyes my hair for me!) I'd say keep your eye out for local salons offering this service or local beauty colleges/training academies.

    Thanks for that.

I did buy a box of dye but I am too scared to try it.
I think I'll have to save up & go to a salon.

    Cheers.

My mum dyes her hair at home with a semi-permanent and it looks great. She has light brown hair with a fair bit of grey in it and she dyes it a blonde/light brown colour. What is nice is that the grey/non-grey areas take the dye in different ways so it sort of looks like it is naturally high-lighted. I think her hairdresser recommended the colour. What's good is that if it did look awful it will wash out in a few weeks!

Highlights & lowlights will do the trick . Find yourself a good hairdresser and keep those Grey's away :)

I've been colouring in the greys for years - since my early 20s - and am not brand loyal in any way! My "top tips" would be to choose a colour which is quite a few shades lighter than your own non-grey hair, and to go for semi-permanent (the box will say something like how it lasts for six to eight weeks). IMO the greys pick up the colour but will be a little lighter than the rest of your hair and so looks much more natural than a solid monotone. There should be a less obvious root line as the coloured hair grows longer. Unfortunately grey roots are the big down side of colouring your hair.

If you use any anti-dandruff shampoos these can make your hair dye colour fade quite quickly, so you might need to apply a new colour sooner than the box says.

I am really tempted to let me hair go to its natural grey colour, much to the horror of anyone I mention it to, simply because of the ugly grey roots and the mess of colouring it at home.

I am just 50 and have a lot of grey - was a very dark brunette.

I quite like having lighter hair as it suits my (ageing) skin tone. I have thought about having the grey dluted by caramel low lights. As I have never coloured my hair I am nervous of commiting to something that moves me from 'natural' to 'not natural' if you know what I mean.

As I have been a dfw my excuse for not doing it was money saving. Debt free now so I might have to do it.

    Scary.
  • I started going grey at 17 and used a home dye until about 18 months ago. It covered they grey hair well, but it totally ruined the condition of my hair (which is fairly long) and ended up looking very patchy. I've been going to a salon for the past 18 months and it now looks great. The colour is much more even and the condition of my hair is brilliant. However, it's very pricey compared to dying it at home. I pay around £77 for a cut, colour and blow dry and about £10 less if just my roots need to be done. This is about £70 more than doing it at home.

Hi All - many thanks for the tips.

I don't like the stripey hair look - if you know what I mean. I have natural highlights at the front - the rest is mouseyish brown I suppose.

£77 seems a lot of money - I am totally out of touch. My hair is long & probably to hard to do myself properly.
I think I'll go to the hairdressers & pay attention so that I can replicate it at home later on.

    Many thanks all.
