Intrum Justitia - interest charges on account?

I have an old Barclaycard debt that was taken on by Intrum Justitia. When they originally contacted me I made a couple of £100 a month payments but was unable to continue so stopped paying (without notifying them).
Several months later (can't remember the exact timings) they got back in touch and as my situation was better I started regular payments of £100 a month. This has been on-going for some time now (well over a year I think) but when I last checked my account online with them I noticed that in the period I didn't pay them I have been charged £200-£300 interest on a balance of £3000-£4000 (I can't check as their account management site has been down for over a week).
Is this correct? I'm happy to pay my debt but the interest seems a little high for such a short period of time. I'd ideally like to have it removed but I'm not really sure where I stand?

It sounds high but we have been on a dmp for the last 6 months and have 3 cards with barclaycard unfortunately.what is surprising is that they are one of the longest established credit card companies BUT are still charging us the highest interest and even differing amounts on the different cards 12.9 % and 6.9% which we think is really unfair.
Even MBNA are charging less - we have contacted CCCS about this but they say they can't do anything else its up to the company.
It could also be that they have put some charges for default onto your original amount.
Hope you get it sorted we will just keep trying!ITs probably best to let them know when you can't pay and offer them a token amount.0 -
If a DCA is dealing with a debt on behalf of the original creditor, interest may still be added. If the debt has been sold on, then they can only add interest if it states a 3rd party can add this in the actual agreement. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

Thanks GeorgeUK, I think my next step is to identify if they have purchased the debt or whether they simply acting as an agent. Will this be insinuated on any letters I may have received or is this something I will need to call/write to find out?0

You could request a copy of the notice of assignment (this is what shows that the debt has been sold on and that they have a right to collect the debt). If you ever call them make sure you withhold your number.
In the first instance though, i would call the original creditor and ask to confirm that company x are acting on their behalf - then ask if the debt has been sold on to them. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
