Thanks again for the advice. I will send them a letter but wonder if asking to defer interest for a period (six months?) and make a payment of say £30 a month off the overall debt would placate them? If I could get six months on the understanding that when I get a job normal (!?) service could be resumed I think it would make managing a lot easier. I havent a clue as to how flexible these people are. I think Im just worried about taking the first step, esp. as the National Debt guy told me not to speak to them on the phone as they can get quite pushy. I think if I could come to an arrangement the relief would be vast! Thanks again.

Numpty's letter asks them to stop charges for 1 month while you get your affairs in order. This gives you time to work out a budget that works without leaving yourself short for bills etc.
After the month you can send another letter with your offer with a request to stop interest and charges for 6 months. The important point is that the offer should be what you can afford it does not matter if it is £1. It is much better to have priority bills, petrol / job hunting expenses in your budget than to leave yourself short and pay more just because they shout loud.

Send the letters recorded delivery so you can show that they were delivered.
