Should I Take My Slow Cooker Back?

Options
After reading you all raving about your slow cookers i decided to buy one, i got a 5.5L one Paul Rankin reduced in robert dyas for £20:j Anyway, i cooked a chicken casserole which was fine, it did cook very fast even though it was on low and was simmering quite a lot, i then yesterday threw in 8 sausages, some potatoes and a jar of sausage tonight, i put it on at about 7.30am and by the time i got home at 3 it had almost burnt dry, the whole house stank and most of the sausages had completly welded themselves to the sides. is this normal, was i supposed to add more liquid? there was no instruction book on how long to leave things but after hearing people say they've left theirs on for 24 hours i think mine may be knackered!! Help!

  • I wonder if your lid didn't fit properly? I always leave mine for hours but the lid needs to fit properly and form a water seal. if the liquid can escape/evaporate then you're bu99ered!!! I would take it back and see if you can get a replacement and check the lid!!

Mine doesn't fit properly but I remedy this with clingfilm or tin foil.

I find the sauce's in a jar a bit thick. They don't seem to cook as well in a slow cooker as there is not enough liquid. I use two jar in my SC and it is only a small one.

  • Rikki how small is it and what make is it?

Try adding a bit of water with it next time coz I do find the sauces a bit thick even when I am cooking it in the oven.

  • Sounds like it is just too big for what you want to cook. You probably would have been better with a smaller one for those sort of quantities (1 jar sauce)
as a result the food will be spread out over a large surface area so sauce will not be very deep, and will cook very quickly and start to dry out.
My mum had this problem with her big one, whereas I had a little one and wanted bigger quantities. We swapped SC and both of us have been fine since.Mum uses same recipes now in small sc and they cook fine.
