First Job after a year dissappears after a week!!

They can't just make you redundant without warning. Unless there's an "introductory period" where you don't have any rights, then this is almost certainly illegal.
Give ACAS a call (08457 474 747 or 020 7210 3613 for the switchboard) - they should be able to tell you your rights. It may be worth sending the cafe invoices each week/month for your missing wages (assuming they're not paying you automatically). If they don't pay you may be able to take them to an employment tribunal.0 -

Redundant after a week?
Introductory period?
Invoices for missing wages?
Taking them to an employment tribunal? (I thought the best they would get was 1 week's salary, for the statutory notice, and ET is a lot of hard work!).
What sort of advice are you giving here?
You don't normally post on the employment forum.....0 -
They probably took on the 2nd choice for the week you were away and they like him/her more and they worked as hard as you and had no holidays booked. The manager probably knows them personally or something. Its not fair but generally, life is not fair
Good luck getting something else quickly0 -
As much as i'd like to challenge their conduct... i'm really done with all the hassle now. This was a minimum-wage position which I took on to take the pressure off finding my ideal job and to get myself off benefits.
Though they never mentioned anything about a trial-period, no contract was ever signed.
All communications with both the manager and owners have been a struggle with each one passing the buck back between themselves.. Phonecalls being ignored....Messages not being answered.
I appreciate the advice, though I think it is probably a little heavy-handed for this situation.
Thanks all.0 -

I figured this was a likely possibility. Ah well...Onwards and upwards.0 -
