To all those who have posted that they won't buy BM products, what do you buy?
.:D
Chicken breasts from the butcher.
Or if I have to from the supermarket but its none of that refined stuff that BM sells- don't know what they put into it, don't know where they get the meat from! Chicken breasts themselves when cooked you can cut into peices and keep for a few days in the fridge, they workout just as expensive as the over priced BM 80% chicken slices! If I need to buy slices (rare, very very rare infact not happened for several years) I make sure it has 100% meat in and nothing is reformed.0 -
I do not and never will buy BM products, I am aware of the bad publicity but also aware that many other comapnies could easily be guilt of cruelty and neglect, the main reason for me is because it is all processed garbage, really if you actually seen what went into your yummy turkey burgers and turkey ham (turley ham whats all that about) then you would probably not feed the raw ingredients to your dog, but plenty of people have no problem shoving them down their kids throats.
It really is that simple, I hate buyng any kind of meat from supermarkets and always try to use the local butcher or farms, they shoot themselves in the foot a hell of a lot with their prices but too me it is worth it, I know what my kids are eating and believe it or not so far none of them are showing any signs if turning into hoody wearing anti social looniesIts all down to the food belive me it is............................

I so agree. I can watch my local Farm shop butcher make the sausages (about £2 for 6 thick ones) that I buy. Her meat comes from her husband's farm where it is all free range and moving towards organic AND I get a decent chat. Her prices are lower than the supermarkets generally and I know how good her meat is. Then it's across the road for a dozen free range eggs (£1.60, yes £1.60 a dozen!). I asked friends in Texas about their local butchers and they said that they had none left there now - it's all supermarkets. Support your local shops, they aren't necessarily more expensive and the service is personal to you.0 -
I buy my meat from Waitrose - they've just won the Compassionate Supermarket of the Year 2010 award. I'd rather pay a bit more for meat that has been produced compassionately and eat less of it.0

Interesting thread...
I always wonder about origin of meat.
Looking at Chicken breast in Netto (£4.50) compared against chicken breast in Tesco (£6.50) compared against chicken breast in M&S/Waitrose etc (£8.50)-Prices approximate.
How the hell can anyone tell that's it not all from the same source?
To be fair, how is someone like me joe public, going to find out about the welfare of these chickens prior to slaughter, what are they fed etc etc
There is no way we can find out and I think people that believe they are paying more for better welfare etc are living in the dark ages. You might get a difference in Organic local produce, but all other bulk stuff is not even worth thinking about.0 -
Well I always liked Bernard Matthew's Turkey Drummers.0

what bugs me is that folks like Jamie Oliver etc say 'use the best meat you can afford' - but when it comes to chicken breasts, then they are usually pretty dear in supermarkets(which lets face it, is where most people shop), so people buy the value range which is obviously not 'free range, organic, corn fed' etc etc chicken.
Then we are being preached about the issues of buying chicken breasts from poorly treated chickens which are sold at around £4 a kilo.
That incident of the workers ill-treating turkeys/chickens at BM may have been isolated case/cases, and i am pretty certain they dont tolerate such behaviour these days.
IMO - BM=bootiful.. sorry couldn't resist:embarasse0 -

So your saying that at one point they knew about the animal cruelty and just ignored it?
I think not!
I think IMO its a case of big fat cat managers working a company with poor staff moral and lack of a good company ethic. Down to managers wanting an easy life and so not associating with the lower paid workers, they have no need to so don't go out of their way to do anything, they are happy enough with their wage and doing as little as possible to get it. I have worked in companies where I have seen this happen before, its not uncommon.
I do now doubt that the rules have changed. I doubt that the company has decided to turn over a brand new leaf. Though I would have thought they'd fired the people shown to be cruel to the animals, I doubt those were iscolated cases, theres no smoke without fire. I have not suddently seen BM highlighted as the next bext company of 2010 and I have not heard any good press at all. As a matter of caution I cannot allow myself to buy their brand and wherever possible with change brand (Butchers etc) or go without. -I'd rather eat Tofu and thats going some!0 -
To all those who have posted that they won't buy BM products, what do you buy?
The OP is correct, BM do supply some supermarket own brand products. I have delivered to all the major supermarkets BM products, and along side the BM labels were own brands, all loaded out of the same BM factory.
So you may not think your buying BM when you actually are.:D
I do buy from supermarkets but l also buy from local butchers, l never buy reformed meat. It's possible that some chicken l buy could have originated from BM - which l wouldn't be happy about - but l will not buy his branded products.
I'm sure most of his turkeys are bred abroad now (it is Hungary they come from?) and are shipped over which is another thing l disagree with and if l buy supermarket meat l make sure it's British.
Happy moneysaving all.0 -
